business, we proceed as follows:
The regular meetings of the Library Board of Trustees are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at
6:00 PMin the Main Library, Auditorium, 840 West Orange Avenue,South San Francisco, California.
Public Comment
: For those wishing to address the Board of Trustees on any Agenda or non-Agendized item,
please complete a Speaker Card available from the Main Library and submit it to the Library's Administrative
Assistant. Please be sure to indicate the Agenda Item # you wish to address or the topic of your public comment.
California law prevents the Board of Trustees from taking action on any item noton the Agenda (except in
emergency circumstances). Your question or problem may be referred to staff for investigation or action (or
both) where appropriate or the matter may be placed on a future Agenda for more comprehensive action or a
report. When your name is called, please state your name and address (optional) for the Minutes. COMMENTS
ARE LIMITED TO THREE (3) MINUTES PER SPEAKER. Thank you for your cooperation.
The Library Board President will read successively the items of business appearing on the Agenda. As she
completes reading an item, it will be ready for Board discussion or action.

CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 6:00P.M. in the Main Library.
ATTENDANCE
Library Trustees present: Diane Huddleston, Cisca Hansen,Pat FitzPatrick, and Robert
Turnberg.Library staff present: Valerie Sommer, Library Director;Adam Elsholz, Assistant
Library Director;Elia Moreno, Administrative AssistantII;Shawnte Santos, Patron Services
Program Manager;and Martin Pinol, Youth Services Librarian.Guests:Marian Lee, Assistant
City Manager;Kumkum Gupta; Steven Yee.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes of the regular July24,2018meeting were approved as presented.
PUBLIC COMMENTS
Kumkum Gupta attended the Half Moon Bay Librarygrand opening andrecommends people a
visit. Shenoticed interesting items that may be helpful in ournewcommunity civic campus
project and also mentioned theupcoming City of Hayward Library grand openingwhich is
tentatively scheduled for October 27. Kumkum alsoattended andenjoyed thelibrary’s August 27
estate planning program,presentedby PatriciaDe Fonte. The program had a great turnout with
almost 50patrons in attendance.

OLD BUSINESS
Library Openings and RecruitmentUpdates
There are currently three vacantLibrary positions.Recruitments for two Librarian positions and
one Supervising Library Specialist will openin earlySeptember, with oral board examinations
tentatively scheduled for the end of October.
Community Civic Campus Project Update–Marian Lee, Assistant City Manager
Assistant City ManagerMarian Lee updated the Library Board of Trustees onthe Community
Civic Campus Project. On August 22, 2018, City Council approved amaster plan option to
South San Francisco Public Library Board of TrusteesPage 2Unapproved Minutes –August 28, 2018
include a combination of under-building parking and surface parking, providing more outdoor
space. The project will advance tothe schematic design phase.The projected cost for the
Community Civic Center Campus, including the Library and Community Center and Police
facilitiesis$210 million. The spaceis beingdesignedto allocate 5,000 square feet for the
Council Chambers/ Community Theatre, 75,000 square feet shared between the Library and
Parks and Recreation, 67,000 square feet of outdoor space and, structured and outside parking. A
staff report was presented to the City Council for the funding plan, which willbe finalized within
the next year.There is currently a funding gap of $16.2 million that will not be covered with
Measure W revenue. Fundraising will be a key means in filling this gap, with a proposed goal of
$10 million. The schematic design phase is expected to be completedby the end of this year,
withthe finaldesign completed by November 2019.
NEW BUSINESS
Presentation: Comics Conference for Educators and Librarians –Shawnte Santos and Martin Pinol
Patron Services Manager, Shawnte Santos and, Youth Services Librarian, Martin Pinol,both
attended the Comics Conference for Educators and Librarians in San Diego.Shawnte and Martin
had the opportunity to present as part of a panel onthe Peninsula Library Comic Arts Fest held in
February2018.For several years, both Main and Grand Avenue Library have hostedprograms
during February for the Comic Arts Fest, as part of a county-wide library initiative. Shawnte’s
and Martin’spresentation was entitled “No Budget, No Author, No Problem,” explaining how to
provide comic programming very limitedfunds.They were happy to share that teen
participation and attendance in library programs and usage has increased almost 600 percent,
California Library Association Annual Conference in Santa Clara
The California Library Association Annual Conference will this year be hosted in Santa Clara

from November 9to November 11.During the CLA conference, local teacher and library
supporter RueRandallClifford will be acknowledgedand inducted into the California Library
th
Hall of Fameduring the CLA awards dinner on Saturday, November 10.Ms. Clifford rode
through SSF on horseback, getting signatures to ask Andrew Carnegie to build a library here.
Appointment of Officers
Francisca Hansen has resigned her place as Vice Presidentbecause she is being “termed out”
from the Library Board.The appointment of officers was made as follows: Pat FitzPatrick as
President; Robert Turnberg as Vice President;andDiane Huddleston as Secretary.

GOOD AND WELFARE
Valerie Sommer shared a great news articleregarding the new Half Moon Bay Library, “New
Library is More Than a Building, it Represents Hope.”
