business, we proceed as follows:
The regular meetings of the Library Board of Trustees are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at
6:00 PMin the Main Library, Auditorium, 840 West Orange Avenue,South San Francisco, California.
Public Comment
: For those wishing to address the Board of Trustees on any Agenda or non-Agendized item,
please complete a Speaker Card available from the Main Library and submit it to the Library's Administrative
Assistant. Please be sure to indicate the Agenda Item # you wish to address or the topic of your public comment.
California law prevents the Board of Trustees from taking action on any item noton the Agenda (except in
emergency circumstances). Your question or problem may be referred to staff for investigation or action (or
both) where appropriate or the matter may be placed on a future Agenda for more comprehensive action or a
report. When your name is called, please state your name and address (optional) for the Minutes. COMMENTS
ARE LIMITED TO THREE (3) MINUTES PER SPEAKER. Thank you for your cooperation.
The Library Board President will read successively the items of business appearing on the Agenda. As she
completes reading an item, it will be ready for Board discussion or action.

b)The library is proud to be an event host for the 100th anniversary of Children’s Book Week! The

theme for this year’s celebration is Read Now • Read Forever. Please join us on Saturday, May 4
at 1:00 PM at the Main Library for a celebration of books for young people of all ages, featuring
games, crafts, and all things books!

c)The South San Francisco Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale will be Saturday, May 11
from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the Main Library Auditorium.
d)Learn about the development of South San Francisco’s Filipino community and Alice Bulos' life,
an important Filipino-American community leader. The presentationwill be on Saturday, May

18 at 10:00 AM at Mater Dolorosa and, will be followed by a guest speaker panel. Library staff
will also announce our photo collection and oral history projects.
e)Book Club meets every third Tuesday of the month at 6:00 P.M. at the Main Library. The May
Book Club selection is The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See.

CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 6:00P.M. in the Main Library.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion to approve the minutes fromthe February 26, 2019meeting was made, seconded and
approved.
PUBLIC COMMENTS
Kumkum Gupta attended the Walgreenspresentation regarding diabetes management on Sunday,
March 24, 2019 at the Main Library. Shestated the presentation was very well done.

OLD BUSINESS
Library Openings and RecruitmentUpdates
An offer has recently been made to fill Brittany Austin’s previous, open position ofLibrarian II.
The candidate has accepted andthe start date is set for Monday, April 22, 2019.The Library has
receivedCity Managerapproval to begin recruitment for the open Library Assistant II position; we
arenowin the queue fortheHuman ResourcesDepartmentrecruitment process.
New Main Library and Community Center Design Update
Ground breaking of thenewPolice Departmentfacilityis tentatively scheduled for the beginning of
2020, followed by theground breaking ofNew Main Library/ Parks and Recreation facility, by the
end of 2020.Draft of the 100% schematic design is nearcompletionwith minor adjustments to be
made. The Schematic Design proposal is scheduled to be presented to City Council at the
Wednesday, May 8, 2019meetingfor approval, at which point we will begin the Design
Development phase.A presentationbySmithGroup of the exterior layout and designof the New
Community Civic Campus will be madeto the Library Boardat the next meeting.

Library Board Handbook Updates
An update of staff photos and roster has been distributed to the Library Board members. The ALA
statements, Freedom to Readand Freedom to View, have also been distributed to include under
Library policies.
NEW BUSINESS
Discussion and Motion toChange the Date of the April 23, 2019 Meeting to April 15, 2019
A discussion and motion to change the date of thescheduledApril 23, 2019 Library Board of
Trustees meeting to April 15, 2019 was moved, seconded and approved.
Library Budget Draft Narrative, FY 2019/20120 and 2020/2021
The Library Board reviewedthe Library Budget Draft Narrative for fiscal years2019/2020 and
2020/2021.
Library Networking Event on May 18, 2019
A small working group, including Assistant Library Director Adam Elsholz, has planned and
scheduled a Library Networking Event at the Redwood Shores Library on Saturday, May 18.
Taking the place of one of our annual Day in the District meetings, Senator Jerry Hill will be the
featured speaker.This is an opportunity for Library supporters to network and discuss current
library issues.

New Main Library/Community Center Planning Update –Presentationfrom SmithGroup.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
National Library Week is April 7 –13! Join us for an eventful, program filled week to
celebrate:
a)Meet the members of the South San Francisco Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory
Committee and enjoy a viewing of “Power to the Pedals –Bike Culture,” on Wednesday,
April 10, 6:00 –7:30 P.M.
b)In honor of National Library Week, a proclamation will be presented at the Wednesday,
April 10 City Council meeting.
c)Open House Celebrations will be held all day on Friday, April 12 at both Main and Grand
Avenue Libraries. Programs, crafts and refreshments will be provided all day!
d)Discover, discuss and engage in our Book to Action program! Our One City One Book
author talk and discussion with David Goodrich on his book, A Hole in the Wind: A
Climate Scientist’s Bicycle Journey Across the United States,will be held on Saturday,
April 13 from 2:00 –3:30 P.M. at the Main Library.
Both Main and Grand Avenue Libraries will be closed on Sunday, April 21, 2019 for Easter.
