You are invited to offer your suggestions. In order that you may know our method of conducting Library
business, we proceed as follows:
The regular meetings of the Library Board of Trustees are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at
6:00 PMin the Main Library, Auditorium, 840 West Orange Avenue,South San Francisco, California.
Public Comment
: For those wishing to address the Board of Trustees on any Agenda or non-Agendized item,
please complete a Speaker Card available from the Main Library and submit it to the Library's Administrative
Assistant. Please be sure to indicate the Agenda Item # you wish to address or the topic of your public comment.
California law prevents the Board of Trustees from taking action on any item noton the Agenda (except in
emergency circumstances). Your question or problem may be referred to staff for investigation or action (or
both) where appropriate or the matter may be placed on a future Agenda for more comprehensive action or a
report. When your name is called, please state your name and address (optional) for the Minutes. COMMENTS
ARE LIMITED TO THREE (3) MINUTES PER SPEAKER. Thank you for your cooperation.
The Library Board President will read successively the items of business appearing on the Agenda. As she
completes reading an item, it will be ready for Board discussion or action.

New Year’s –Both libraries will be open 10:00 am –1:00 pm on Tuesday, December 31and
closed Wednesday, January 1, 2019.

Martin Luther King Day –Both libraries will be closed on Sunday, January 19and Monday,

b)Celebrate Winter at the Main Library’s Winter Open House on Friday, December 13from
2:00 –4:00 p.m.
c)Have you ever wanted to paint like a master? Here's your chance! Christie, from Christie's
Creative Cupboard will bring all the supplies and show us how with her Paint Like Monet
program. No experience is necessary. You will be encouraged and enjoy an evening of painting
while you meet neighbors and friends. Registration is required for this event; please call (650)-
829-3860 tosign up. Seats are limited. This event is for ages 18+.

CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 6:00P.M. in the MainLibrary.
ATTENDANCE
Library Trustees present:Pat FitzPatrick, Diane Huddleston, Robert Turnberg, Liru Chinand
Mary Giusti.Library staff present: Valerie Sommer, Library Director; Adam Elsholz; Shawnte
Santos;andElia Moreno, Administrative AssistantII.Guests:KumkumGupta and Monterey
Gordon, Library Assistant II.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion to approve the minutes fromtheSeptember 24, 2019meeting was made, seconded and
approved.
PUBLIC COMMENTS
Kumkum Gupta attended the Electric Vehicle presentation on Saturday, October 5,2019. She
was very complimentary of theprogram and excellent attendanceand hopes people will now
begin to purchase more electric vehicles. Kumkum is very impressed with all the different
programs being offered at the Library.

The Board reviewed the Director’s Report.

OLD BUSINESS
Library Opening and Recruitments
All full time positions in the Library are currently filled. The Library Director cannot remember
a time when this was so.
New Main Library and Parks & Recreation Community Center Project Update
Library staff has been very involved in the Design Development phase and have attended various
meetingswith the project team.Staff attended a furniture presentation atSmithGroup offices in
San Francisco.Floor and carpet samples are currently being shown for the new building; all
finishes are a work in progress and not all choices have been finalized. The team is in theprocess

of costing out the building which includes everything from furniture, computers,IT equipment,
AMH systems, etc.
NEW BUSINESS
Introduction of New Staff Member: Monterey Gordon, Library AssistantII
Monterey Gordon was promoted to full time Library Assistant II in August,2019. Monte has
been a South San Francisco resident for most of his life. He graduated with a degree in
Information Systems from San Francisco State University in 2017. Monte started his work with
theCity of South San Francisco as an hourly employee withthe Library and IT departments. He
findsa lot of joy in working with patrons, from eldersto children. He hopes to be able to
continue to provide top notch service to all patrons.
Discussion and Motion to Approve the 2020 Holiday Schedule
The draft 2020 Holiday Schedule was reviewed. A correction on the January 1, 2021 holiday
closure was made. A motion to approve the amended 2020 Holiday Schedule was made,
seconded and approved.
Nominations for 2020 Slate of Officers
Nominations of officers were madeas follows: DianeHuddleston as President; Robert Turnberg
as Vice President; Mary Giusti as Secretary. The official election of officers is scheduled to take
place during the January 21, 2020 meeting.
Discussionand Motion to Amend the Library Conduct Policy
Discussion to amend the Library Conduct Policy wasmade. A motion to approve was made,
seconded and approved.
Discussionand Motion to cancel the regular meeting of December 24, 2019
A motion to approve the cancellation of the regular meeting on December 24, 2019 was made
and approved.
Discussion to and Motion to participatein the holiday Food for Fines program for 2019
Last year, patrons from both of the South San Francisco Public Libraries brought in 1,300
pounds of food donations. Discussionand motion to participate in the holiday Food for Fines
program for 2019 was made, seconded and approved.The holiday Food for Fines program for

Project Read’s 27Annual Trivia Challenge will be held on Friday, November 15at the South
San Francisco Conference Center. Doors open at 5:30 P.M.
Former South San Francisco councilmember, John Penna will be having a book talk and signing

of his novel, Who Am I, on Saturday, November 23at 2:00 P.M. at the Main Library.

Both Main and Grand Avenue Libraries will be closed on Sunday, November 10and Monday,

November 11in honor of Veterans Day.Special Thanksgiving Holiday hours for Wednesday,

November 27are as follows:Main Library 10:00 A.M. –6:00 P.M.; Grand Avenue Library

12:00 P.M. –6:00 P.M. Both libraries will be closed Thursday, November 28and Friday,

November 29for Thanksgiving.
