File Number: 24-609 Enactment Number: ORD 1658-2024
ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 2.12 OF THE
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO MUNICIPAL CODE AND
PROVIDING FOR A SALARY INCREASE FOR THE
MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL.
WHEREAS, the City Council finds that California Government Code Section 36516 provides that
a city council may enact an ordinance providing that each member of the city council shall receive a salary
based on the population of the city; and
WHEREAS, the compensation schedule set forth under Government Code Section 36516(a)(1) has
not been adjusted since 2017; and
WHEREAS, Ordinance No. 1536, adopted in 2017, provided for a salary of $1,000 per month for
members of City Council pursuant to Government Code Section 36516; and
WHEREAS, on June 29, 2023, the California Legislature passed SB-329, which amended
Government Code Section 36516 to increase the maximum amounts of salary that can be approved by city
ordinance in order to account for inflation and support diversity in city councils; and
WHEREAS, Government Code Section 36516(a)(2)(A) as amended in 2023 now provides that
councilmember salaries for cities over 50,000 up to and including 75,000 in population, may be up to and
including one thousand six hundred dollars ($1,600) per month; and
WHEREAS, according to the most recent U.S. Census data, as of July 1, 2022, the population
estimate for the City is 63,484; and

individuals from across different income levels and with different financial needs receive sufficient income
for their service; and

to $1,400 per month.
NOW THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of South San Francisco does ordain as follows:
