AGENDA REVIEW: N/A IV. PUBLIC COMMENT: N/A V. PRESENTATIONS 1. Public Art Requirement – Quarterly Developers Report  Business Manager O’Brien presented the quarterly developers report on the public art requirement. The Commission briefly discussed items from the presentation and expressed their excitement to see the private development art contribution portion of the Public Art Ordinance coming to fruition.  In response to a question from Chair Pomposo about the possibility of visiting artwork at developer sites, Director Mediati stated that staff have discussed the possibility of arranging tours once more art comes online east of Highway 101.  Commissioner Foley requested that the value of art installations be added to future reports. 2. Cancellation of Summer Commission Meeting  Deputy Director Duldulao presented the recommendation to consider cancelling a Commission meeting during the summer months.  Commissioner Foley and Commissioner Maharaj expressed their preference to cancel the June meeting siting both travel plans as well as allowing staff a break during the summer months.  Several Commissioners stated that their preference would be to not cancel any meetings. Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of April 23, 2024 Page 2  After discussion, the Commission decided not to cancel any meetings during the summer. 3. Subcommittee Reports  June Art Show  Commissioner Huerta shared that the flyer for the June art show is ready.  Performing Arts  Business Manager O’Brien, shared that the Cultural Activities Grant has been extended to May 24, 2024.  Public Art  Commissioner Boldenweck gave updates on the following:  Aquatic Center: A mosaic is being considered for this location.  Bat Country: The project has been outpriced and is likely not being considered for installation anymore.  Business Manager O’Brien informed the Commission that the future park at Linden and Pine is still in the early stages of getting public input.  Strategic Vision  Commissioner Bond shared that the subcommittee and staff discussed the possibility of acquiring a consultant to assist staff with public art decisions and acquisitions for the future.  Commissioner Bond and Business Manager O’Brien informed the Commission that staff would be taking to the City Council a proposal to reduce the total number of Commissioners that sit on the Cultural Arts Commission from eleven to nine.  Youth Art Programs  Commissioner Sanchez shared that there were over 500 visitors at the Youth Art Show. The art show featured 3 performing arts presentations, over 400 pieces of artwork on three floors, and a crafts table. 74 artworks are currently on extended exhibit on the 2nd and 3rd floors until May 3.  Chair Pomposo shared that the Youth Poet in Residence deadline had been extended to April 14 and she hopes to have results from the Library to share at the May Commission meeting.  Goals Chart  The updated Goals Chart was provided to the Commission for their information. VI. MATTERS FOR CONSIDERATION 4. Motion to approve the minutes of March 26, 2024  Motion: Commissioner Foley  Seconded: Commissioner DeNatale  Roll Call Vote Results | Minutes for March 26 stand as sent. (AYES: Boldenweck, DeNatale, Fernandez, Foley, Huerta, Luster, Maharaj, Pomposo, Sanchez ABSENT: Ramos ABSTAIN: Bond). 5. Quarterly Art Show Subcommittee Consolidation  Motion: Commissioner Bond  Seconded: Commissioner Fernandez  Roll Call Vote Results | The Art Show Subcommittees will be consolidated into one single subcommittee. (AYES: Bond, Boldenweck, DeNatale, Fernández, Foley, Huerta, Luster, Maharaj, Pomposo, Sanchez ABSENT: Ramos). Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of April 23, 2024 Page 3  Cultural Arts Specialist Santos presented the proposal to consolidate the three quarterly Art Show subcommittees, excluding the Youth Art Programs subcommittee, into one subcommittee.  Specialist Santos provided further information outlining the tasks the subcommittees currently oversee.  She noted that as the Commission transitions to a more advisory role than a working board, the volunteer requirement will be lifted from the Commissioners, although volunteering will still be encouraged.  Commissioners supported and responded favorably to the proposal but also acknowledged the importance of participation in the art shows to continue to build relationships with the artists and community members. 6. Relocation of Evohelix sculpture to Centennial Way Park South  Motion: Commissioner Boldenweck  Seconded: Vice Chair Luster  Roll Call Vote Results | The Evohelix sculpture will be relocated to Centennial Way Park South. (AYES: Bond, Boldenweck, DeNatale, Fernandez, Foley, Huerta, Luster, Maharaj, Pomposo, Sanchez ABSENT: Ramos).  Business Manager O’Brien presented the background on the sculpture Evohelix and explained that the sculpture will need to be relocated from the current site as the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) has construction slated within the year.  A new site for the relocation of Evohelix, previously discussed with the Public Art Subcommittee, was presented for Centennial Way Park South (between Huntington Ave. and Spruce Ave.).  Business Manager O’Brien reminded the commission of the art funds earmarked for the Centennial Way Park South project and explained that this is where the funding for the relocation would come from. 7. Recommendations for the 2024 Jack Drago Cultural Arts Commission Youth Art Scholarship recipient(s)  Motion: Vice Chair Luster  Seconded: Commissioner Bond  Roll Call Vote Results | The scholarship amount was increased from $3,000 to $5,000. (AYES: Bond, Boldenweck, DeNatale, Fernandez, Foley, Huerta, Luster, Maharaj, Pomposo, Sanchez ABSENT: Ramos).  Motion: Commissioner Sanchez  Seconded: Vice Chair Luster  Roll Call Vote Results | The Commission agreed on the award distribution amounts for each recipient. (AYES: Bond, Boldenweck, DeNatale, Fernandez, Foley, Huerta, Luster, Maharaj, Pomposo, Sanchez ABSENT: Ramos).  Cultural Arts Specialist Santos provided a brief background on the Jack Drago Cultural Arts Commission Youth Art Scholarship, and explained the next steps once award recipients were decided upon.  Commissioner DeNatale presented recommendations on behalf of the Youth Arts Programs subcommittee. He shared the committee’s enthusiasm for each of the five Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of April 23, 2024 Page 4 applicants and requested that the Commission increase the proposed award amount from $3,000 to $5,000.  The Commission agreed to proceed with increasing the scholarship funding to $5,000 for distribution to the award recipients:  $2,000 - Matthew Woo  $1,000 - Lauren Ta  $1,000 - Isabella Gonzalez  $500 - Thomas Gatdula  $500 - Hannah Olpindo  Chair Pomposo reported which commissioners have volunteered to represent the Commission at the awards ceremonies at El Camino and South San Francisco High Schools:  May 7 – Commissioners DeNatale and Hernandez  May 14 – Vice Chair Luster and Commissioner Sanchez VII. ITEMS FROM COMMISSIONERS:  Commissioner Bond and Commissioner DeNatale acknowledged Commissioner Boldenweck as her term nears the end. They recognized her years of service for the Commission, and her incredible mentorship, leadership, and friendship. Many Commissioners echoed the same sentiments.  Commissioner Huerta shared with the Commission the upcoming Ballet Folklorico spring concert will be on Friday, May 3 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 5 at 2:00 p.m. at the South San Francisco High School Auditorium.  Commissioner Foley shared his open studio days will be on May 11 and 12 in Redwood City.  Chair Pomposo announced she will receive the Women of the Year Award at the upcoming City Council meeting on Wednesday, April 24. She invited the Commission to attend. VIII. ITEMS FROM STAFF  Business Manager O’Brien, announced the following:  Arbor Day: Saturday, April 27, 11:00 a.m., at Westborough Park  Volunteer Appreciation Picnic: Sunday, April 28, 11:00 a.m., at Orange Park  California Parks and Recreation (CPRS) District 4 Awards Night: Thursday, May 9, 2024 hosted at the LPR building.  South San Francisco Pride: Saturday, June 1, in front of City Hall.  Commissioner attendance is tracked and reported to the Clerk’s Office.  Correspondence was provided by Specialist Santos and will also be emailed.
