CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION MEETING
CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO
Tuesday, May 28, 2024
I. CALL TO ORDER: 6:30 p.m.

V. PRESENTATIONS
1. Presentation of the 2024 Jack Drago Cultural Arts Commission Youth Art Scholarship Award Recipients
Specialist Santos welcomed the Jack Drago Cultural Arts Commission Youth Art Scholarship recipient, Isabella Gonzalez, who was awarded $1,000. Specialist Santos thanked the Commission for their time in selecting the award recipients and invited them to attend the City Council meeting on June 12 where the scholarship recipients will be
acknowledged.
2. Fiscal Year 2024-2025 Parks and Recreation Department Operating Budget Related to Cultural Arts Programs
Business Manager O’Brien informed the Commission that the City is facing a structural budget deficit with some impact to Cultural Arts programs. She informed the Commission that the Parks and Recreation Department identified several budget reductions, one of them being the Cultural Activities Grant for 2025. These budget
reductions will be presented to City Council on June 12, 2024.
Commissioner Bond inquired about alternative funding to replace or help support the Cultural Activities Grant. Business Manager O’Brien informed the Commission that City staff is always looking for other forms of grants and opportunities to help support Cultural Arts.

Commissioner Fernandez inquired about the history of the Cultural Activities Grant and
the possible implications if it is approved as a budget reduction. Business Manager O’Brien informed the Commission that the grant is supplemental to recipients. 3. Subcommittee Reports
June Art Show | Art Gallery/Exhibits
Commissioner Huerta informed the Commission that the art entry deadline was May 27. She added that there are over 20 participants registered for the art show and that
a docent sign up will be shared with the Commission to assist with the art show. The
art show will be judged by artist Michele De La Menardiere and will feature two performances on opening night, June 14, 2024. She also welcomed Commissioners to submit their art entry by June 12 and reminded them that their fee is waived.
Performing Arts
Chair Pomposo informed the Commission that the 2023-24 Cultural Activities Grant recipients will be invited to the June meeting. She added that the Commission
received 11 applications for 2024-25 Cultural Activities Grant.
Public Art
Commissioner Boldenweck reminded the Commission that the Bat Country sculpture installation will no longer be proceeding. She inquired about the placement of the Evohelix sculpture and Business Manager O’Brien responded that it will be placed on Centennial Way Park South, between the playground and open
lawn area. Commissioner Boldenweck thanked the Commission for the opportunity to serve on the Commission and reminded them a new chair is needed for the subcommittee as she completes her term.
Strategic Vision
Commissioner DeNatale asked the Commissioners to consider joining the subcommittee as he completes his term.
Commissioner Bond informed the Commission that they discussed reducing the
number of Commissioners serving. Business Manager O’Brien added that the
Commission will likely be reduced to nine Commissioners instead of eleven. This proposal was first presented to the City Council on May 22 with full Council support, and will go before City Council again on June 12, 2024 for final adoption.
Commissioner Bond added that this would reduce the number of maximum commissioners on each subcommittees to four.
Commissioner Bond thanked everyone for the opportunity to serve on the
Commission.
Youth Art Programs
Commissioner DeNatale informed the Commission that Commissioner Fernandez and himself presented the Jack Drago Cultural Arts Commission Youth Art Scholarship award to recipients at the El Camino High School awards ceremony. He encouraged the Commission to seek fundraising opportunities.
Commissioner Fernandez expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to present
the award and reiterated the importance of continuing to support young artists.
Chair Pomposo informed the Commission that Commissioner Ramos and herself presented the Jack Drago Cultural Arts Commission Youth Art Scholarship award to recipients at the South San Francisco High School awards ceremony.

Business Manager O’Brien reminded the Commission that the City does not award
scholarships and that the money awarded comes from the Commission’s fundraising efforts.
Commissioner Fernandez asked if there was an ordinance in place that prohibits the City from awarding money. Director Mediati responded that there is a state law in place that prohibits the City from awarding with use of tax payer money.
Chair Pomposo informed the Commission that she was a judge for the Library’s
Youth Poet-in-Residence.
Goals Chart
The Goals Chart was provided to the Commission for their information. VI. MATTERS FOR CONSIDERATION 4. Motion to approve the minutes of April 23, 2024

VII. ITEMS FROM COMMISSIONERS:
Commissioner DeNatale shared with the Commission that he will have his art showcased at the Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica from May 31st through June 3rd
Commissioners Fernandez and DeNatale were excited and grateful to attend the South San Francisco Pride Event on June 1, 2024.
Commissioner Pomposo noted that she was mentioned in the Daily Journal newspaper for her acceptance as one of the South San Francico Women of the Year.
VIII. ITEMS FROM STAFF
Business Manager O’Brien announced the following:
South San Franciso Pride Event: 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Grand Avenue
South San Franciso Civic Ballet Spring Showcase will be on June 2, 2024, at the South San Francisco High School Auditorium at 2:00 p.m.
Mayor Coleman announced at the City Council meeting that Commissioner absences will be monitored closely. Absences are reported to the City Clerk’s Office on a quarterly basis.
Commissioner Boldenweck will be acknowledged for her three terms of service at
the June 12, 2024, City Council meeting and presented with a proclamation.
Correspondence was provided by Specialist Santos.
IX. ADJOUNRNMENT
