ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners: Fernandez (6:32 p.m.) *, Foley, Huerta, Luster, Maharaj (6:34 p.m.) *, Pomposo, Ramos Absent: Commissioners: Sanchez Staff Present: Greg Mediati, Director of Parks and Recreation Angela Duldulao, Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation Erin O’Brien, Business Manager Keren Solano, Administrative Assistant II III. AGENDA REVIEW: N/A IV. PUBLIC COMMENT: N/A V. PRESENTATIONS 1. Report regarding the Cultural Activities Grant from Stir Fry Stories and Amir Esfahani  Management Analyst Jung introduced V.C. Tang from Stir Fry Stories, who was a recipient of the 2023 Cultural Activities Grant. V.C. Tang gave a brief presentation to the Commission on her experience with bringing sunset Tai Chi to the South San Francisco community. She described the process of scouting locations, design, and her final learnings. The Commission was content with the award recipient’s work and presentation. The Commission discussed the various benefits of Tai Chi and several Commissioners expressed interest in starting to practice it.  Skyline College professor, Amir Esfahani, recipient of the 2023 Cultural Activities Grant, was not present at the meeting but provided a video to the Commission for them to view the process involved in making the new mural. The Commission was happy with the outcome of the new mural. They also mentioned wanting to see more murals that represent the various cultures and diversity in South San Francisco.  Management Analyst Jung explained to the Commission that three groups forfeited their grants. Commissioner Fernandez inquired if their awards could be applied towards another year. Business Manager O’Brien responded that staff are reviewing options, and will discuss with the City Manager and will inform the Commission once a decision is made. 2. Capital Projects Update Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of July 23, 2024 Page 2  Deputy Director of Capital Projects Vitale provided an update on the new park at Linden Avenue and Pine Avenue, the Karyl Matsumoto Plaza, and the Centennial Way Trail Park South projects. He also added that the upcoming National Night Out event on August 6 at Paradise Valley will have a public outreach component to gain input on the new park opportunity at Linden and Pine Avenue.  The Commission inquired about the locations of National Night Out events in South San Francisco. Director Mediati informed them that the locations will be announced at the upcoming City Council meeting and directed the Commission to the website.  The Commission shared that the current farmer’s market location at Orange Park may not be the best location and expressed that the Linden Avenue area could possibly be a better location. Deputy Director of Capital Projects Vitale reminded Commissioners they are seeking input on the design of the space at Linden Avenue and Pine Avenue and that the programming of those spaces will come after the project is finalized. Director Mediati responded that the farmer’s market is ran through the City Manager’s Office and the Parks and Recreation Department provides the location. 3. Subcommittee Reports  Art Gallery Exhibits  The subcommittee informed the Commission that a flyer for the October art show was created by Commissioner Huerta. The art show theme is “Explore your Roots.” Chair Pomposo announced they were looking into having two performing arts groups at the art show.  Fundraising  Chair Pomposo informed the Commission that they have been tasked with providing ten names of vendors for the upcoming Concert in the Park, as there will be ten booths dedicated to vendors that feature arts.  Business Manager O’Brien informed the Commission that there is a $50 vendor application fee which will go to the Commission’s fundraising fund for the ten art vendors.  Performing Arts  Chair Pomposo informed the Commission that the City Attorney’s Office is reviewing the Cultural Arts Activities Grant applications for FY 2023-24.  Public Art  No update.  Strategic Vision  No update.  Youth Art Programs  No update. VI. MATTERS FOR CONSIDERATION 5. Motion to approve the minutes of June 25, 2024  Motion: Commissioner Huerta  Seconded: Commissioner Foley  Roll Call Vote Results | Minutes for June 25 stand as sent. (AYES: Fernandez, Foley, Huerta, Pomposo, Ramos ABSTAIN: Luster, Maharaj ABSENT: Sanchez). VII. ITEMS FROM COMMISSIONERS:  No update. Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of July 23, 2024 Page 3 VIII. ITEMS FROM STAFF  Business Manager, O’Brien, announced the following:  Improving Public Places (IPP) planting event at Alta Loma Park on Saturday, July 27 at 9:00 a.m.  The ribbon cutting event for the Karyl Matsumoto Plaza, located at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Airport Boulevard, will take place on Saturday, September 21.  Concert in the Park will be on Saturday, September 21 at the Orange Memorial Park meadow. Opening band will be Blessid Union of Souls and the headliner band will be Dazz Band.  Artist Claudio Talavera-Ballón will give an upcoming author talk in the Council Chambers. Details are still be worked out.  The second Movie Night will be on Friday, August 16 at Martin Elementary School field and will show Trolls Band Together.  There are currently two vacancies on the Commission. Applications for potential commissioners will be due on August 5 and interviews will be held on August 27.  Fall class registration for residents will open on August 12 at 6:00 a.m. online.  Commissioners inquired about the approximate attendance for the Concert in the Park and if Cultural Arts Commission merchandise will be sold at the event. Staff will look at the inventory and decide if the Commission’s merchandise will be sold at this event.  Commissioner Foley inquired about the next artist that will be featured in the first-floor corridor area at the Library | Parks and Recreation Center (LPR). Staff Are working on rolling out another Request for Proposals for the first-floor solo exhibit. IX.
