ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners: Fernandez, Foley, Huerta, Luster (6:59 p.m.) *, Maharaj (6:33 p.m.) *, Pomposo, Ramos, Sanchez Absent: Commissioners: None Staff Present: Greg Mediati, Director of Parks and Recreation Angela Duldulao, Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation Erin O’Brien, Business Manager Ercie Santos, Cultural Arts Specialist Keren Solano, Administrative Assistant II III. AGENDA REVIEW: N/A IV. PUBLIC COMMENT: NON-AGENDA ITEMS The following individual addressed the Cultural Arts Commission:  Olga Perez V. PRESENTATIONS  Report regarding the Cultural Activities Grant from Patricia Martinelli for Mexican Folklorico Dance & Cultural Awareness Class  On behalf of Management Analyst Jung and Patricia Martinelli, Business Manager O’Brien presented the report regarding the Cultural Activities Grant for the Mexican Folklorico Dance and Cultural Awareness Class.  Commissioner Ramos questioned why other groups forfeited and Business Manager O’Brien reminded the Commission that Management Analyst Jung provided the reasons during her presentation at the July meeting and summarized the various reasons from travel expenses to temporary program closures, etc.  Commissioner Fernandez inquired if the forfeited funds will be returned and when the new grant will be announced. Business Manager O’Brien reminded the Commission that the grant was part of the budget cuts for FY 2024-25 and noted that staff are reviewing options for the forfeited funds and would present to the subcommittee and the full commission once vetted through appropriate City departments.  Cultural Arts Funding Review for Fiscal Year 2024-25 as of July 31, 2024  Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation Duldulao presented the quarterly funding review to the Commission. Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of August 27, 2024 Page 2  Commissioner Foley inquired about the final cost for the new sculpture at the Karyl Matsumoto Plaza. Deputy Director Duldulao responded that staff will have the final cost towards the completion of the project.  Commissioner Fernandez asked if staff was actively seeking grant prospects. Deputy Director Duldulao responded that staff is always seeking grant opportunities. Director Mediati added that Townsend and Associates is a consultant that shares monthly reports on potential grant opportunities for the City.  Commissioner Ramos suggested reaching out to the private sector for grant opportunities and mentioned she could help with this.  Director Mediati added that staff most recently applied to grants from Kaiser Permanente and Genentech for the upcoming Concert in the Park.  New Art Show Award Category  Specialist Santos described a unique new award category that will be presented to one deserving art entry. The awardee is selected by up to two Cultural Arts Commissioners and receives a $50 cash prize. The presentation of this new award commences with the October 2024 art show and will be a part of future art shows.  Subcommittee Reports  Art Gallery Exhibits  Business Manager O’Brien informed the Commission that the solo artist exhibit by Claudio Talavera-Ballón, currently on the first floor of the Library | Parks and Recreation Center (LPR), has been extended through Friday, November 1. Specialist Santos added that Claudio will present an artist’s talk on October 12. The event time will be shared once available.  Specialist Santos reminded the Commission that they are not expected to assist at the October 11 and 12 art show, “Explore Your Roots.” However, all Commissioners are encouraged to attend the weekend opening dates. If interested in helping, Commissioners should contact Specialist Santos no later than Friday, October 4. Commissioners can refer to the schedule in the Call for Entries Calendar. There will be two art delivery times on Tuesday, October 8 from 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The new earlier time slot allows accessibility for participants who are concerned about traveling after the daylight hours end.  A link for a special online art entry form will be emailed to Commissioners. This is provided as a courtesy to the Commission or invited guest judges and artists and waives the entry fee if they wish to submit art.  Artist Evangelina Portillo will present a Day of the Dead craft activity on Saturday, October 12, in conjunction with the art show. More details on the activity to follow.  Fundraising  Business Manager O’Brien informed the Commission that at least 10 art vendors are confirmed to have a booth at the upcoming Concert in the Park event. Their $50 entry fee will go towards the Cultural Arts Donation account. She also reminded the Commission that this subcommittee needs a Chair.  Performing Arts  No update.  Public Art  No update. Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of August 27, 2024 Page 3  Strategic Vision  Commissioner Fernandez announced she would be chairing the Strategic Vision subcommittee.  Youth Art Programs  No update. VI. MATTERS FOR CONSIDERATION 5. Motion to approve the minutes of July 23, 2024  Motion: Commissioner Maharaj  Seconded: Commissioner Foley  Roll Call Vote Results | Minutes for July 23 stand as sent. (AYES: Fernandez, Foley, Huerta, Luster, Maharaj, Pomposo, Ramos ABSTAIN: Sanchez ABSENT: None). VII. ITEMS FROM COMMISSIONERS:  Commissioner Foley asked about the monetary contribution from the project located on Airport Blvd. Director Mediati explained that Commissioner Foley may be referring to the $500,000 received from the IQHQ project, which were designated for art within a half mile radius of the IQHQ building. A portion of these funds have been allocated to the Karyl Matsumoto Plaza project. The remaining balance is being confirmed. Staff still need to explore additional options for art.  Commissioner Fernandez informed staff that there is not enough signage at the South City Caltrain Station. Director Mediati responded that her concern would be reported to the Public Works Department.  Chair Pomposo invited Commissioners to attend the upcoming Women’s Club Crafts Fair on Saturday, September 7. She also announced there will be an event for Filipino Heritage Month at the Library | Parks and Recreation Center (LPR) from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. VIII. ITEMS FROM STAFF  Specialist Santos, announced the following:  Concert in the Park will be on Saturday, September 21 at the Orange Memorial Park meadow from 11:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  The sculpture dedication at the Karyl Matsumoto Plaza, located at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Airport Boulevard, will take place on Saturday, September 21.  Biotech Speaker Series has two remaining presentations from their series. Registration is required to attend. The next presentation takes place on September 27 at the Library | Parks and Recreation Center Council Chambers from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Festa Italiana will take place on September 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Orange Memorial Park.  Halloween Extravaganza will be on Saturday, October 19 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Orange Memorial Park.  Garden Champagne Party hosted by the South San Francisco Historical Society will be on Saturday, October 5 from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Plymire-Schwarz House.  The Fall 2024 Activity Guide is available. IX.
