INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM
DATE: January 12,2008
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: Susan Kennedy, Assistant to the City Manager.::)~
SUBJECT: Farmers' Market Cost and Background
Council n1enlber Gm'bm'ino requested infornlation regarding the cost of the Farmer's
Market over the past three years. When we changed Market Management conlpanies in
2005, from California Farmers' Market Association to Pacific Coast Farmers' Market
Association (PCFMA), Council approved an agreement paying a total of $26,000 over
three years. The $26,000 "vas broken up into three paynlents, $12,000 in 2005, $8,000 in
2006 and $6,000 in 2007. These costs help PCFMA cover costs such as advertising,
permits, entertainment, stafft1nle, printing, etc. I have spoken with PCFMA's
Inanagement and they indicated an interest in continuing a ll1arket in South San Francisco
at a cost of $6,000 for the 2008 season.
Attendance for our market has varied m1d during 2005 we had PCFMA track estimated
attendance. At that tune attendance seemed to run on an average of just under 1000
people on a weekly basis. It should also be noted that 2005, was our last year to have
Morning Brew participate with a coffee cart which seemed to draw people who would
buy a cup of coffee, a pastIy and chat. Replacing the coffee cart has been difficult as
Inost vendors are already committed to other events or have not been interested in
participating.
While our attendance numbers are sonletnnes snlall, we do have a very loyal group of
111arket attendees who have been quite passionate about our market, l11any of whom were
quite vocal when the market dropped its year round status in late 2004.
The City has also utilized the nlarket for outreach purposes periodically featuring
progranls and events sponsored by various departl11ents which has also been wen
received.
I am happy to provide any additional information Council may need.
