COMMENTS ARE LIMITED TO THREE (3) MINUTES PER SPEAKER
Under the Public Comment section of the agenda, members of the public may speak on any item not listed on the
Agenda. Pursuant to provisions of the Brown Act, no action may be taken on a matter unless it is listed on the
agenda, or unless certain emergency or special circumstances exist. The Chair may direct staff to investigate
and/or schedule certain matters for consideration at a future meeting. If there appears to be a large number of
speakers, the Chair may reduce speaking time to limit the total amount of time for public comments (Gov. Code
sec. 54954.3(b)(1).).

Be inspired and create! Grand Avenue Library is kicking off Women's History Month
with a Kids' Art Workshop celebrating some of our favorite artists! In our workshop,
you'll experiment with mixed-media collage in the style of Patricia Abad, draw a
portrait inspired by the work of Frida Kahlo, and explore observational painting as
you recreate one of Georgia O'Keeffe's flowers. While supplies last.

Brad Hamada, long-time partner with the Library, is offering a free monthly financial
literacy series starting in March at the main Library. The first class will focus on
Social Security. Through this workshop, you will obtain a better understanding of the
overall Social Security picture and walk away with knowledge and resources to know
how to make the best decision for yourself, your family, and your future generations.

Jobs for Youth program in offering a series of job-seeking workshops for teens!
Success starts with knowing yourself and being yourself! Learn the difference
between soft and technical skills; discover how to apply your own passions, talents,
and goals towards finding the right job. All young people between the ages of 14 and
21 are eligible to attend.

Explore the myriad and fascinating depictions of female deities throughout Asia.
From fierce warriors and dakinis to peaceful and benevolent bodhisattvas, these
goddesses cover all the bases. Goddesses play an important and prominent role in all
the Asian religions. From fertile earth maidens, to nurturing mothers, from wrathful
avengers, to wise advisors - these deities provide for their supplicants and followers.
The Asian Art Museum Docent Program is generously supported by the Dhanam
Foundation and Society for Asian Art. This program is made possible by the South
San Francisco Friends of the Library.
g)Holiday closure: All Libraries will be closed on Easter Sunday, March 31st.

January 30, 2024 Library I Parks and Recreation Center
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 6:00 P.M. in the Main Library, 2nd Floor Community Room in
the Library I Parks and Recreation Center.
ROLL CALL
Library Trustees present: Hector Camacho, Mary Giusti, Diane Huddleston and Claire Ramsey.
Library Staff present: Valerie Sommer, Library Director; Adam Elsholz, Assistant Library
Director; and Anita Palafox, Administrative Assistant II. Guests: Catherine Abalos, Ruth DeNardi,
and Kumkum Gupta.
AGENDA REVIEW
No changes.
PUBLIC COMMENTS
Kumkum Gupta – Very happy with EV parking, alleviates looking for parking. There are good
programs going on at the library.
Ruth DeNardi – Impressed with the Lion Dance performance, great performance, lots of
community of all ages. Would like to see more community involvement at the Grand Ave Library
events, suggested more outreach to schools. Ruth suggested having the following programs at the
Library: a pollinator plants program for families, a sustainability program with SSF Scavengers
and mind/body/meditation program.
Catherine Abalos – Shared quarter size flyers as a recommendation that would go along with
sustainability theme.

November 2023 Library Director’s Report
The Board reviewed the Director's Report.
Communications and Statistics
The Board members mentioned they were impressed with the increased numbers of transactions.
Library | Parks and Recreation Center Update
Library usage and interest in building is high. We currently have over 30 teen volunteers. Parking
continues to be one of the main issues of concern. There has been discussion about extending
Library hours on Thursdays and Sundays next year. Library comment cards from the lobby are
mostly positive, excepting parking complaints.

MATTERS FOR CONSIDERATION
Review and Approval of Draft Minutes from the November 28, 2023 Library Board Meeting
Motion to approve the minutes as presented from the November 28, 2023 meeting was made by
Board Secretary Claire Ramsey, and seconded by Board Member Diane Huddleston. All members
were in favor.
ITEMS FROM BOARD MEMBERS
Discussion and Motion to Amend the Main Library Group Study and Meeting Use Policy
Motion to approve and Amend the Main Library Group Study and Meeting Use Policy was made
by Library Board Member Diane Huddleston and seconded by Board Member Hector Camacho.
All members were in favor.
Election of the 2024 Officers
Nominations of officers were made as follows: Claire Ramsey as President; Hector Camacho as
Vice President; Diane Huddleston as Secretary. Motion to elect the officers as nominated was
made, seconded, and approved by acclamation.
Unanimous Thank You Mary Giusti for her time as Library Board President.
Introduction of New Staff
a) Philecia Harris, Librarian II, Adult Services – comes to the library with approximately 30
years of library experience.
b) Bobby Leiva, Librarian II, Youth Services – was an hourly employee for 6 years with SSF
Main Library and now a full-time staff member with Youth Services.
LIBRARY ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Library Board of Trustees reviewed the Library Announcements.
NEXT MEETING DATE AND AGENDA BUILDING
Agenda Building: Recruitment Update
The next meeting of the Library Board of Trustees will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at
6:00 PM in the Library | Parks and Recreation Center, Collaboration Room #3, Third Floor. This
room change is due to the Early Vote Center installation in the Community Room.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business President Claire Ramsey adjourned the Library Board of Trustees
meeting at 6:40 P.M.
