REGULAR PARKS AND RECREATION MEETING May 20, 2025 MINUTES PAGE 3 Meeting recessed at 9:00 p.m. Meeting resumed at 9:05 p.m. ITEMS FROM THE COMMISSION Commissioner Uy shares that he liked seeing the City and staff receive awards at the CPRS dinner. Commissioner Lock commends Manager O’Brien, CPRS District 4 President., on how she ran the CPRS event. Commissioner Rey shares that she started regularly visiting different parks with her dog. The three she has visited so far are Avalon Park, Sellick Park, and Westborough Park. She suggested considering a future dog park at Westborough Park. She also comments that the trees closest to Westborough Blvd. are beautiful and as the City starts to reimagine what will happen with that side of the park, she would love to see the trees stay, benches added, and a fenced open space added there for the dog area. Vice Chair Camacho comments that since it’s an unused area that you can’t do too much more with, it would be a good area to add the dog space to bring even more people to the park. Commissioner Rey asks if the stairs leading up to the tennis courts will remain with the construction of the new preschool and will all the new trees that were planted remain. Director Mediati responded that the stairs will remain and believes the trees will as well. Vice Chair Camacho then shares that she looked to see what San Francisco Recreation and Parks is offering for older kids and they have a website called Youth Employment Programs. It offers two different programs called Workreation and Greenager Program and if at some point the City is considering doing something similar, there is a model to look to. Commissioner DeNardi expresses that the Easter Egg event signage was beautiful and that it was a great idea to bring it to LPR. The trees at Avalon Memorial Park are going to be a beautiful canopy once they mature. She would like to see a forest bathing program sometime in the future. Commissioner DeNardi shares that she attended the Arbor Day Celebration and helped with the planting along Sister Cities and enjoyed that it was a multigenerational event. Secretary Battaglia shares that she also attended the Easter event and enjoyed it. She was able to witness Lisa Wilson accept the Older Americans Month Proclamation. She was really interested in Congressman Mullin’s art contest, and which artwork was chosen to go to Washington D.C. Secretary Battaglia congratulates Manager O’Brien and thought that it was great that Bill Stridbeck received an award, and that Patrick Dunleavy received a recognition. She shares that she also attended the Senior Health Fair last week and thanks staff for all of the work they have done. Chair Burgo is looking forward to all the projects and watching the progress each is making. She shares that she also attended the City Council meeting and is excited to get additional information on the restroom and is curious to hear about the parking. ITEMS FROM STAFF Director Mediati shares that the Youth Baseball Memorial Day tournament is this weekend and Parks staff are busy preparing the field and restrooms for that event and Mike’s and Josh’s staff will be there throughout the day. He then shares that the pine tree near City Hall by the playground will have to be removed because it’s declining. They plan to relandscape that corner.
