HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 35-2001 RESOLUTION NO. 35-2001 CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE INDUSTRIAL CITY RAIL-TRAIL PROJECT WHEREAS, the City of South San Francisco has experienced rapid growth in the biotechnology and hotel industries during the last decade in the area east of highway 101; and WHEREAS, the region as a whole is experiencing worsening levels of traffic congestion; and WHEREAS, Cal Train commuter rail provides regular service from San Francisco and San Jose and points in between to the South San Francisco CalTrain Station as an alternative to the frequently congested highway 101; and WHEREAS, Commuter Ferry Service is being planned with a terminal facility at the South San Francisco Oyster Point Marina. WHEREAS, there is neither regular bus transit nor a safe and pleasant bicycle/pedestrian route connecting the Cal Train station to Oyster Point and Bay Trail; and WHEREAS, the numerous abandoned rail spur lines in the eastern section of the City provide a unique opportunity to preserve this linear strip of land as open space and a non- motorized transportation corridor; and WHEREAS, a multi-use trail connection would provide a transportation facility for commuters and recreational possibilities for pedestrians, skater, and bicyclists; and WHEREAS, such a facility would benefit the health and well-being of the citizens of and visitors to the City of South San Francisco; and WHEREAS, adoption of this resolution would be consistent with the South San Francisco General Plan, in addition to creating a vital connection between the forthcoming BART-SFO extension trail and the Bay Trail. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of South San Francisco that the City Council hereby supports the acquisition and conversion of the abandoned rail spur between the intersections of East Grand Boulevard and Forbes Boulevard and Oyster Point to a greenway facility, and will work with relevant county, state, and federal agencies in order to expedite this project. I hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was regularly introduced and adopted by the City Council of the City of South San Francisco at a Regular meeting held on the 25th day of April , 2001 by the following vote: AYES: NOES: ABSTAIN: ABSENT: Councilmembers Pedro Gonzalez, Karyl Matsumoto and John R.
