CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE
INDUSTRIAL CITY RAIL-TRAIL PROJECT
WHEREAS, the City of South San Francisco has experienced rapid growth in the
biotechnology and hotel industries during the last decade in the area east of highway 101; and
WHEREAS, the region as a whole is experiencing worsening levels of traffic congestion;
and
WHEREAS, Cal Train commuter rail provides regular service from San Francisco and
San Jose and points in between to the South San Francisco CalTrain Station as an alternative to
the frequently congested highway 101; and
WHEREAS, Commuter Ferry Service is being planned with a terminal facility at the
South San Francisco Oyster Point Marina.
WHEREAS, there is neither regular bus transit nor a safe and pleasant bicycle/pedestrian
route connecting the Cal Train station to Oyster Point and Bay Trail; and
WHEREAS, the numerous abandoned rail spur lines in the eastern section of the City
provide a unique opportunity to preserve this linear strip of land as open space and a non-
motorized transportation corridor; and
WHEREAS, a multi-use trail connection would provide a transportation facility for
commuters and recreational possibilities for pedestrians, skater, and bicyclists; and
WHEREAS, such a facility would benefit the health and well-being of the citizens of and
visitors to the City of South San Francisco; and
WHEREAS, adoption of this resolution would be consistent with the South San
Francisco General Plan, in addition to creating a vital connection between the forthcoming
BART-SFO extension trail and the Bay Trail.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of South San
Francisco that the City Council hereby supports the acquisition and conversion of the abandoned
rail spur between the intersections of East Grand Boulevard and Forbes Boulevard and Oyster
Point to a greenway facility, and will work with relevant county, state, and federal agencies in
order to expedite this project.
