CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
A RESOLUTION FINDING AND DETERMINING THE NEED
FOR CHANGES OR MODIFICATIONS TO THE UNIFORM
FIRE CODE, 1997 EDITION
WHEREAS, Section 17958 of the Health & Safety Code requires the adoption by the
City of South San Francisco of regulations imposing the requirements of certain uniform industry
codes as specified in Health & Safety Code § 17922; and
WHEREAS, Health & Safety Code § 17958.5 permits a city to make such changes or
modifications to the uniform codes as deemed reasonable because of local climatic, geological,
or topographical conditions.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of South San
Francisco that pursuant to the requirements of Health & Safety Code § 17958.7, the City Council
finds and determines there is a need to adopt the following changes or modifications to the
California Fire Code, 1997 Edition (Municipal Code Chapter 15.24), and its Appendices by
reason of local conditions:
1. Climatic, Geological, and Topographical Changes.

Section 1003.2.2, All Occupancies Except Group R, Division 3 and Group U, is
amended, and Section 1003.2.2.1, Automatic Sprinklers Systems Required in
Certain Buildings, is added to impose specific fire sprinkler requirements to
address the City's increased fire risk due to the City's high housing density, the
narrow design of its alleys and streets, and the City's windy climate.

Section 1003.2.2.2, Buildings Greater Than Four Stories But Less Than 75 Feet, is
added to impose specific fire prevention, detection, control and escape
requirements to address the City's increased fire risk due to its proximity to the
San Andreas Fault, and windy climate, and high density of occupants.
Appendix III-B, Table A-III-B-1, Number and Distribution of Fire Hydrants, is
amended to decrease the required fire hydrant spacing in order to address the
City's increased local fire risk caused by the City's proximity to the San Andreas
Fault, its windy climate, and the narrow design of many of the City's buildings,
streets and alleys.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is hereby directed to cause a copy of
this resolution, together with the ordinance making the changes or modifications to the California
Fire Code, 1997 Edition, and its Appendices to be filed with the State Department of Housing
and Community Development and the California Building Standards Commission.

City Council of the City of South San Francisco at a regul ar meeting held on the 8th
day of December, 1999 by the following vote:
