CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
A RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING A SISTER CITY
RELATIONSHIP WITH THE BASQUE CITY OF DONIBANE
GARAZI
WHEREAS, in 1996, the City Council adopted Resolution No. 90-96, approving Sister City
Program guidelines and identifying the responsibilities ofthe City and the South San Francisco Sister
City Committee ("Committee"); and
WHEREAS, the City has a vibrant Basque community and the Basque Cultural Board of
Directors has expressed a strong desire to establish the aforementioned sister city relationship in
honor of the ties the City has with this community; and
WHEREAS, the Committee recommends that the City enter into a sister city relationship
with the Basque city of Donibane Garazi; and
WHEREAS, it is to the mutual advantage of the cities of Donibane Garazi, France, and South
San Francisco and the citizens thereof to cultivate economic cooperation and cultural interchange
between each other.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of South San
Francisco that the City Council hereby:
1. Establishes a formal sister city relationship with the City of Donibane Garazi, France to
promote mutually beneficial cultural, educational, social, and economic growth.
2. Appoints asub-committee for the sister city, which will act as the designated representative,
as required by Sister City Program guidelines.
3. Authorizes the Mayor, or his or her designee, to travel to Donibane Garazi to represent the
City during official ceremonies, and to sign all necessary documents to formalize this
relationship.
I hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was regularly introduced and adopted by the
City Council of the City of South San Francisco at a regular meeting held on the 28th day of October,
2009 by the following vote:
AYES: Councilmembers Pedro Gonzalez, Richard A. Garbarino, and Kevin Mullin,
Vice Mayor Mark Addie~o and Mayor Karl Matsumoto
