CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
A RESOLUTION AMENDING THE CLASSI-
FICATION PLAN OF THE CITY OF SOUTH
SAN FRANCISCO
BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
South San Francisco that the Classification Plan of the
City of South San Francisco is amended to include the
following new positions:
Maintenance Man I
Maintenance Man II
Maintenance Man III
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the title, description
and typical duties and responsibilities, statement of
training, experience and other requirements as set forth
in Section 4.O1 of the Rules and Regulations, which are
attached hereto as Exhibit "A", are hereby approved.

MAINTENANCE MAN T
DEFIN ITI ON
~Under supervision, does varied, semi-skilled manual tasks often
requiring .considerable physical strength; and does related work as
required
JOB CHARACTERISTICS'. :~'
This is the entrance-level class in the Street Department for
applicants with some experience in construction work. Emp~lo~ees in
this class.are required to perform a wide variety of manual Sasks
under supe~vision. Light equipment such as jackhammers ~may be
operated by a Maintenance Man I, but trucks and heavier equipment~
are driven incidentally to other duties and for trai~ing pu~poses~.-
Excavates and fills trenches and ditches; loads and unloads
trucks whe~ required; sweeps rubbish and leaves from gutters
pi ck-up. . i.
Doesi~anual work in preparing surfaces for paving, mixi~/~$ement,
and brea~g up paved surfaces. Uses ·such tools as shovels,~,~kes~/
tampers, and Jackhammer.
MiNI~ER4 QUALIFI CATIONS
Knowledge of:

JOB CHARACTERISTICS
Many of the assignments of a Maintenance Man II a~'~tlar to
~hose given to ~he next lower class, Maintenance Man I~!~Tl~e Mainte-
nance Man II, however, is regularly assigned tasks
experience ~ the skilled field. Another distinguishing~feA~ure of
this class is the routine operation of trucks and related equipment.
EmI~lOyees i~ this class may be given assignments involving ~ndepeudent
responsibility for work performed except for occasional inspections
by a foreman or other supervisor.

Under minimum supervision, maintenance wox'k
buildings, utilities and equipment, streets, sidewalks, sewers,
related ~£acilities; and does related work as required.
JoB cHARACTERISTICS
This position is not in the classified service. Appointment is
made at the~discretion of the Superintendent of Public Works with the
approval of the appointing authority.
The classification of Mainzenance Man IIi involves respom~ibility
for working alone or with a small crew and under minimum supe~sio~.
Pr.actically all of the work per~ormed is semi-skilled or bet~S~:.
nature. ~.-This class is distinguyshed from Maintenance Man
responSibility and degree of sk_ll required. The Maintena~i!.i~ I~Z
