CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
RESOLUTION SUPPORTING ESTABLISHMENT
OF STATE COLLEGE IN SAN MATEO COUNTY
WHEREAS, the ever expanding population of San Mateo
County has created a two-fold problem of both the exist-
ing colleges whose capacities are being overreached and
for the students residing in San Mateo County who have a
difficult, if not intolerable, problem of attending classes
in colleges located in adjoining counties; and
WHEREAS, each of the counties contiguous to San Mateo
County has at least one state college or university present-
ly located within that county: San Francisco State College
in the City and County of San Francisco, the University of
California and California State College in Alameda County,
San Jose State College in Santa Clara County and the Santa
Cruz Campus of the University of California in Santa Cruz
County; and
WHEREAS, an advisory committee, selected to assist
the State College Board in the selection of a mid-peninsula
college site, has had submitted to it a number of proposals
which include several sites located in Santa Clara County
within the general service area of San Jose State College;
and
WHEREAS, the most northerly of the several sites pro-
posed is nearly equidistant between San Francisco State and
San Jose State and is easily accessible to all portions of
San Mateo County from the immediately adjacent Bayshore
Freeway in Redwood City; and
WHEREAS, a substantial number, if not a majority,
of the students for the proposed state college will come
from the growing central and northern area of San Mateo
County and it is essential that the proposed state col-
lege be so located as to conveniently serve these stu-
dents, in the same manner as San Jose State College is
able to serve that portion of the Peninsula's population
belt residing in Palo Alto and south to San Jose;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council
of the City of South San Francisco as follows:
1. That the Council hereby urges that the State
College Board Advisory Committee and the State College
Board act favorably on the proposed location of a state
college in San Mateo County.
2. That this Council hereby approves and endorses
the proposed site in the vicinity of the Whipple Avenue
interchange in the City of Redwood City as being the best
location from among those proposed to serve the students
of this community.
3. That this Council urges that the offer of Leslie
Salt Company for the gift of the first one hundred acres
be accepted immediately in order that regional and
munity planning may best facilitate the establishment of
a San Mateo State College.
4. That copies of this resolution be transmitted by
the Clerk to the Advisory Committee, the State College
Board, and to our legislative representatives.
I hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution
