HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 4525-1966RESOLUTION NO. 4525 CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA A RESOLUTION ENDORSING NATIONAL HIGHWAY WEEK SEPTEMBER 18-24, 1966 WHEREAS, the 41 thousand mile National System of Inter- state and Defense Highways is now 53 percent open to traffic, is saving untold lives yearly; and said System already saves untold millions of dollars through lessening of accidents, congestion and travel time, and WHEREAS, said Interstate System is a part of the 12,4OO mile California Freeway and Expressway System, and said Calif- ornia Freeway System is currently one-third complete and is saving approximately 700 lives yearly together with untold millions of dollars in accident cost, congestion and time saving, and WHEREAS, said California Freeway and Expressway System needs are approximately an additional 7.1'billion dollars be- yond those monies committed to date, and will serve approxi- mately 60 percent of the travel needs of California when completed, and WHEREAS, in addition to these important Systems, there are additional road systems known as the Select System of Major and Secondary County Roads and City Streets which, when completed to adequate, improved design standards, will also contribute to traffic safety, easing of congestion and savings of travel time, and WHEREAS, said select Systems of Major and Secondary Streets are estimated to have deficiencies of 6.5 billion dollars by 1974, with' estimated revenues during the same .1. period .of only 3.8 billion dollars; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of South San Francisco does hereby endorse National Highway Week and the concept that BETTER HIGHWAYS NOW SAVE LIVES, TIME AND MONEY, and further that the National Interstate and De- fense Highway System, the California Freeway and Express System, the Select Systems of Major and Secondary County Road and City Streets are important to the economic and social well-being of the Nation, State of California, County of San Mateo and City of South San Francisco and, therefore, completion of these several Road Systems should be expedited as rapidly, as planning, design and construction budgets will allow. I hereby certify that the foregoing resolution was regularly introduced and adopted by the City Council of the reaul~r meeting , 19 66 , by the City of South San Francisco at a held on the 6th day of Semtember following vote: AYES, COUNCILMEN NOES, " ABSENT, " Frank J.
