WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of South San Francisco has received from Chief John Fabbri a report and recommendation regarding'meritorious perfOrmance of duty by Officer Ronald Petrocchi, and WHEREAS, the Chief of Police cites the following facts in sUpport thereof: "On April 4, 1989, while Officer PetrocChi was in the Bank of America, South San Francisco Branch, off duty, conducting his own private banking, a felony was committed by one Timothy Edward Norman. It was brought to Officer Petrocchi's attention that the suspect was fleeing from the Bank and was pos- sibly being pursued~by another member of this Depart- ment. Disregarding his off duty status and ~afety for himself, Officer Petrocchi pursued the fleeing, armed felOn. The responsible subject was chased for approximately two blocks and was tackled by 0ffieer Petrocchi. The suspect was disarmed and taken into custody. "During the pursuit, another Department member, involved in the chase, was preparing to fire shots to stop the flight of the responsible. The actions of Officer Petrocchi in overtaking the fleeing sus- pect obviated the necessity of discharging firearms during da~ight~hours where numerous citizens were present, which prevented a dangerous situation from developing."
