CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING ACTION BY APPROPRIATE
AUTHORITIES TO ABATE THE POLLUTION OF THE
ENVIRONMENT BY JET AZRCRAFT.

The rapid development of che jet aircraft to meet the
ready demands of the traveling public for fast, efficient and
economical air transportation has caused an intrusion into
the urban environment which is of vital concern to local
government.
The noise of the jet aircraft as it takes off, lands,
awaits take-off or is mechanically tested creates an atmosphere
of sound which makes living in areas adjacent to airports
unpleasant, unhealthy and incor.venient.
The jet engines, while ret.ding the atmosphere with sound,
also discharge pollutants into the air and contribute to the
unabated increase of smog.
In the San Francisco Bay Area, the presence of two major
commercial airports within a few miles of each other promises
to contribute an ever,-increasing volume of noise and air pol-
lution unless those authorities charged with the control of
aircraft and air pollution are given the authority and encouraged
in their efforts to abate the ~ollution of the environment by
jet aircraft.
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of South
San Francisco does RESOLVE as follows:
That all branches of government are urged to analyze
their positions with respect to the control of jet aircraft
toward the end that this gigantic product of twentieth century
technology may be adapted to fit the environmant into which
it has intruded with such sound and pollution, and that where
action is needed, it be taken; ~here control is needed, it

be placed; and where authority is needed to meet this chal-
lenge, it be given; and be it further
RESOLVED, that this Council pledges itself to these ends
and will actively support all steps taken by appropriate
authorities to abate the pollution of the environment by
jet aircraft; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the City Clerk is hereby authorized and
directed to cause a copy of this Resolution to be distributed
to the:
Federal Aviation Administration,
California Congressional delegation,
Representatives of tkis County in the
California Legislature,
Honorable Board of Supervisors of the
County of San Mateo
Cities and Counties within the Bay Area
Air Pollution Control District,
Noise Control Agencies of the San Francisco
and Oakland International Airports
