WHEREAS, Swede Hansen serves as Harbor Superintendent of the South San Francisco Marina, and WHEREAS, on July 12, 1972, Swede discovered an explosion and fire aboard a 45-foot boat berthed in the Marina, and WHEREAS, Swede quickly reacted to the impending disaster by cutting the lines of the burning vessel and, with the help of other employees, pushed it clear of the berth area. He then immediately commandeered a 22-foot inboard-outboard boat, which was privately owned, and with two volunteers pulled up the burning craft, and, disregarding the safety to himself, Swede tied up the burning craft to the commandeered boat and towed it from the vicinity of the berth to the easterly side of the Harbor where it was beached, and WHEREAS, it was later learned that some 670 gallons of additional fuel were in the immediate vicinity of the burning craft, it becomes immensely clear that had not Swede acted instantaneously extensive damage to the pier and other craft would have resulted, and WHEREAS, this display of valor and coumage is not often witnessed in all too often a mundane existence; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of South San Francisco that this Council does commend and honor Swede Hansen for his heroic efforts which so suc- cessfully saved life, limb and property.
