A RESOLUTION APPROVING AN
ADDITI'ON TO THE CLASSIFICA-
· 'TI'ON 'PLAN ................
BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
South San Francisco that the classification plan of the City
of South San Francisco is hereby amended by adding thereto
the "Exhibit A" attached hereto entitled "COMMUNICATIONS
-
DISPATCHER".
I hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was
regularly introduced and adopted by the City Council of the
City of South San Francisco at a regular .... meeting

~DEFINITION' ~'
Assignment to a public safety communications center. Under general super-
vision, to receive and transmit routine and emergency telephone and radio
traffic. Dispatch and coordinate police, fire, public works and other munici-
pal equipment via multi-frequency two-way radio. Maintain and process a Pariety
of communications reports, records, and radio logs.. Do related work as required.
~_ EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
On an assigned shift, reeei~es and disposes of incoming telephone and voice
radio calls for police, fire,-ambulance, and public works; in emergencies,
secures and records information as to exact locations and circumstances, and
uses radio or other equipment to dispatch appropriate units to the emergency
scene; maintains radio contact with local units on assignment and, under super-
vision, directs and coordinates with personnel from other agencies on a mutual
· aid basis; maintains radio logs and records other information as required;
operates a multi-channel two-way radio, PBX telephone system, teletype, data
terminal, voice intercom, fire alarm, intrusion alarm equipment, and other
equipment as needed; provides a variety of information to the general public
by telephone; assists in photographing, fingerprinting, and caring for prisoners
in the City Jail; performs and assists in communications related clerical
functions as required.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to:
Think clearly and act quickly in emergency situations;
Gather, analyze, and evaluate information and independently assess and
disseminate the information clearly to field units;
Work irregular hours;
'Learn the operation-of radio equipment and related information systems;
Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted.

Type at a speed of 30 words per minute;
Demonstratable orientation toward public service;
Speak in a clear and understandable voice, using good English and
proper enunciation.

Experience:
One year of work 'experience requiring maturity and the ability to
accept responsibility, preferably involving some public contact.
and
Education:
High school graduate or GED equivalent;
Additional education in fire science or law enforcement; or communica-
tions experience in military or public safety service desirable.
