HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 35-2012 RESOLUTION NO. 35 -2012 CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA RESOLUTION DESIGNATING THE MISSION BLUE BUTTERFLY AS THE OFFICIAL BUTTERFLY OF THE CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO. WHEREAS, the Mission Blue butterfly (Icaricia icarioides missionensis) is a small butterfly, with an approximately one inch wingspan, and has been designated as a Federal Endangered Species (June 1, 1976); and WHEREAS the Mission Blue butterfly survives in an extremely limited range of habitat in the San Francisco Bay Area that includes areas of South San Francisco and San Bruno Mountain; and WHEREAS, staff recommends that the Mission Blue butterfly be designated as the official City butterfly; and WHEREAS, designating the Mission Blue as the City's official butterfly would have several benefits, including but not limited to: raising public awareness of the Mission Blue butterfly species and its habitat requirements, fostering stewardship for its continued existence, as well as establishing a positive and recognizable graphic image for use on City publications, park signs, logos, presentations, and educational materials. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of South San Francisco that the City Council hereby designates the Mission Blue Butterfly (Icaricia icarioides missionensis) as the official City butterfly of the City of South San Francisco. * * * * * I hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was regularly introduced and adopted by the City Council of the City of South San Francisco at a regular meeting held on the 9th day of May, 2012 by the following vote: AYES: Councilmembers Mark Addiego, Karyl Matsumoto, and Kevin Mullin, Vice Mayor Pedro Gonzalez and Mayor Richard A.
