CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO,STATE OF CALIFORNIA
A RESOLUTION REQUESTING STATE LEGISLATIVE
REPRESENTATIVES TO TAKE NECESSARY ACTION
TO OPPOSE INCREASE IN COMMUTE FARES OF
OF THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC RAILROAD
WHEREAS the City Council of the City of South San
Francisco has been informed that:~
(1) The public policy of the Southern Pacific Railroad
advocates elimination of Peninsula Commuter Service; and
(2) The recent one hundred and eleven per cent (111%)
increase in passenger fares proposed by the Southern Pacific
Railroad may well discourage further passenger patronage con-
sistent with the Company's stated objective; and
(3) The announced fare increase proposal will counter
and offset recent Southern Pacific Railroad advertising for
peninsula passengers as belatedly ordered by the Public
Utilities Commission of the State of California; and
(4) The Public Utilities Commission and the Southern
Pacific Railroad have apparently planned to reduce the attract-
iveness and serviceability of the Southern Pacific Railroad
depot facilities in San Francisco; and
(5) It is the public policy of Southern Pacific Rail-
road not to accept subsidy for passenger service, to advocate
elimination of all passenger service while at. the same time
seeking to continue their freight operations through peninsula
cities at the considerable expense and occasional annoyance
to peninsula taxpayers; and
(6) The stated public policy of the Southern Pacific
Railroad shows a disregard of any social or public responsi-
bility in a community which still tolerates the corporation's
existence as a natural monopoly;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council
of the City of South San Francisco requests its legislative
representatives to take whatever action is deemed necessary
to have the Public Utilities Commission not only refuse the
Southern Pacific Railroad's application for a one hundred
eleven per cent (111%) increase, but to also demand a higher
standard of commuter service as is necessary to encourage
increased patronage of the commuter service which thereby re-
duces operating deficits.
I hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was
regularly introduced and adopted by the City Council of the
City of South San Francisco at a
held on the 7th day of October
