HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 208-1974 RESOLUTION NO. 208-74 CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE BALLOT MEASURE PROPOSING CREATION OF A SAN MATE0 COUNTY 'TRANSIT DISTRICT. WHEREAS, the attention of the general public has been focused on the neads for energy conservation programs in recent months; and WHEREAS, the public interest of San Marco County residents would be well served by facilitating creation of mass transpor- tation systems to more efficiently convey passengers to and from their places of employment and for personal uses; and WHEREAS, increased dependence upon any form of mass trans- portation would decrease the air pollution caused by many auto- mobiles now often occupied by the driver alone; and WHEREAS, the creation of an efficient and effectively designed bus transit system would reduce tr.affic congestion on streets and highways, would help preserve our limited fuel resources, and would assist in reducing the number of traffic deaths and injuries; and WHEREAS, many senior citizens, young people, students and low income persons who are not now able either to afford the initial purchase and maintenance of their private vehicle, or are for health reasons unable to operate a private vehicle, could with creation of a bus transit district begin to participate in employ- ment, shopping and recreational opportunities not now available, and to have better access to medical services; and i · WHEREAS, North San Mateo County voters clearly expressed their interest in mass transportation programs in the June, 1974, State of California Primary Election by giving a large margin of approval to Transit Proposition 5, and County Measure C, ballot measures which would authorize use of specific highway and gas tax funds for certain mass transit systems; and WHEREAS, the proposed ballot measure, if passed, would author- ize creation of a transit district to establish a bus transit system, and any extension of BART to San Mateo County would require a vote of the people; and WHEREAS, the concept of establishing a County Transit Dis- trict has been supported by a wide range of interest groups including the San Mateo. County Development Association, Govern- mental Research Council, Peninsula Manufacturer's Association, League of Women Voters, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors and several cities in the County of San Mateo; and WHEREAS, the proposed legislation (AB 2901) to create a Bus Transit District in San· Mateo County provides financial means and transit district organization adequate to. implement the above goals; and WHEREAS, the State Legislature of California has passed the necessary enabling legislation in the form of AB 2901; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of South San Francisco strongly supports the ballot measure at the November 5, 197.4, General Election, .which would create a San Mateo COunty Bus Transit District. · I hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was regularly introduced and adopted by the City Council of the City of South San Francisco at a regular meeting held on the 16th day of October 19 74 , by the following vote: AYES, COUNCILMEN Richard A.
