CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
A RESOLUTION COMMENDING REVEREND PAUL P. COLEMAN.
RECITALS
REVEREND PAUL P. COLEMAN has contributed to the welfare of this com-
munity for twenty-six years by participating in and supporting numerous
community activities. He has retired as pastor of St. Veronica's Parish
and is being honored on April 17, 1977, by his parisioners and the Council
desires to share in the occasion by commending him for contributing to the
welfare of this community.
A BRIEF REVIEW of his accomplishments as the pastor of St. Veronica's
Parish illustrates the dedicated manner in which he also pursued additional
community and civic activities for the benefit of the City of South San
Francisco.
REVEREND PAUL P. COLEMAN in 1951 came to South San Francisco from our
friendly northern neighbor, San Francisco, to pioneer the establishment of
St. Veronica's Parish. He faced the future with 200 original parishioners,
limited funds, a building site, the tenacity and wit of his Irish ancestors,
a wish and many prayers, if our information is accurate.
SPORTSMEN'S LODGE, a building used for entertainment, including dances
on Saturday nights, was one of the first buildings to feel the force of his
determined spirit and humor while he planned the permanent church facilities.
Each week he converted it into a chapel for the celebration of the first
Masses of St. Veronica's Parish in South San Francisco. Responding to a
Higher Authority he diligently pursued his plans for the church but, not
being a commercial developer, he was unaware of the need to include in the
budget funds for "rendering unto Caesar" the necessary roads, sewers and
other public facilities, an omission which he discovered and took in stride
as he raised the additional funds. He succeeded in establishing a church,
rectory, convent and school, now with 4500 parishioners, and en route to
that success contributed the nucleus for Mater Dolorosa and St. Augustine's
Parishes. His success is not only so weighed but is also measured by the
kind manner in which he ministered to all who needed his guidance, includ-
ing new parishioners and three generations of families of his original
parishioners.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of South
San Francisco that this Council recognizes the contributions to the welfare
of this community made by Reverend Paul P. Coleman and does hereby commend
him therefor, and does further record in the permanent records of this City
this commendation as he commences a well-earned retirement.
