CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
A RESOLUTION AMENDING THE SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO
EMPLOYEE CLASSIFICATION..PLAN..BY-~THE ADDITION,
DELETION' AND-' MODI FICATI ON.~ OF' CERTAIN CLASSES
BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of South San
Francisco that~the ~employee Classification Plan, as amended, is further
amended as fol lows:
1. To Add Specifications for the PoSition Of:
Building Maintenance Custodian; as set forth, in Exhibit "A"
attached hereto.
2. To Modify the Title and Specifications for the Positions of:
Maintenance Worker I, Building Maintenance-to Building
Maintenance Worker; as set forth in Exhibit "B" attached hereto.
Maintenance Worker II, Building Maintenance - to Senior Building
Maintenance Worker; as set forth in Exhibit "C" attached hereto.

BUILDING MAINTENANCE CUSTODIAN
Definition-
,.
Under supervision, to perform routine unskilled and manual cleaning
duties in maintaining City buildings and facilities; and to perform
related work as required.
Examples of Duties-
Sweep, mop, oil, wax and polish floors; vacuum, shampoo and care for
carpets; dust and polish woodwork, furniture, fixtures and equipment;
wash windows, walls and lavatories; empty and clean trash containers
and waste baskets; replace lamps, move chairs, desks and other furniture;
clean and maintain supplies in restrooms; lock and unlock doors; pick up
papers and other debris; assist in setting up rooms for meetings and
other special events; assist in and/or perform other miscellaneous unskilled
janitorial and custodial maintenance work as required.
Minimum Qual i fi cations'
Knowledge of: Methods, materials and equipment used in janitorial and
custodial maintenance; safe work practice;
and
Ability to'
Perform unskilled and heavy, manual labor in janitorial
and custodial maintenance; understand and carry out written
and oral directions; work cooperatively with others; .use a
variety of janitorial and custodial equipment and materials;
and
Experience- One year of janitorial/custodial or closely related experience;
and
Education:
Formal or informal education sufficient to insure the ability
to read and write at the level required for successful job
performance;
License: Possession of valid Class III California Drivers License.

BUILDING MAINTENANCE WORKER
Defini ti on-
Under general supervision, to perform a variety of semi-skilled, unskilled and
manual tasks in the maintenance of City buildings and facilities; and to do related.
work as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics'
This class is distinguished from that of Building Maintenance Custodian in that
incumbents are assigned to do work requiring more skill and knowledge of the
building trades in addition to routine custodial duties and, at times, are
required to work independently assoming.responsibility for buildings and work areas.
_Examples of Duties'
Performs a variety of minor building and equipment repa'irs and maintenance tasks
of carpentry, plumbing, electrical and mechanical nature; make repairs to and
constructs shelving; does minor paint work; sweep, mop, oil, wax and.polish
floors; vacuum carpets and rugs; dust and polish woodwork, furniture, fixtures
and equipment; wash windows, walls and lavatories; empty and clean trash
containers; replace lamps; move chairs, desks, tables and other furniture; is,
at times, responsible for opening and closing City buildings during work hours;
check and replace electrical cords, plugs and switches.; pick-up papers and other
debris; assist in regulating ventilation and temperature controls; assist in
setting up rooms for meetings and other special events.; maintains custodial
supplies and equipment; assist in or perform other miscellaneous building maint-
enance work as required'. -
Minimum Qualifications-
Knowledge of' Methods, materials and equipment used in. the maintenance of public
buildings and facilities; safe work practice;
and
Ability to'
Perform semiskilled tasks in the Building Maintenance Trade and do
heavy manual labor; utilize a variety of equipment and materials
used in maintenance, cleaning and repair work; understand and carry
out oral and written instructions; establish and maintain cooperative
relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
and
Experience:
One year experience in building or general maintenance work which
includes exposure to semiskilled carpentry, plumbing, electrical and
mechanical maintenance ane repairs;
and
Education'
Formal or informal education sufficient to insure the ability to
read and write at the level required for successful job performance;
and
License' Possession of a valid Class III California Drivers License.

SENIOR BUILDING MAINTENANCE WORKER

Definition:
Under general supervision, to perform a variety of skilled, semiskilled and unskilled
duties in the maintenance of City operated buildings and facilities and to do related
work.
Distinguishing Characteristics-
This class is distinguished from the class of Building Maintenance Worker in that.
incumbents are assigned position involving more independent responsibility, some
supervision of other workers, and a higher degree of skill and more versatility in
the building trades. They must have considerable knowledge of general record
keeping and inventory control. These employees also, in the daily course of their
duties, are required to be able to favorably meet the public, such as members of
Council, Commissioners and Representatives of industry.
Examples of Duties-
Independently maintains and supervise .the maintenance of assigned buildings and
facilities. In addition to the regular custodial type duties, this class employee
makes repairs and alterations of a more extensive nature to building electrical
systems and floor coverings, lightings, suspended ceilings, heating and ventilation
systems and controls, etc. They perform duties of receiving, storing, issuing,
stock and inventory control in the operation of a central stores for building
supplies and house-keeping items. They are responsible for maintaining and set-up
of public address and all other equipment required to accommodate Council,
Commissioners and other government agency meetings in whatever building held. To
set-up the EOC for emergency operation of this city government and assist in the
citywide emergency shelter operation. 'Operation, maintenance and upkeed of all
hand and power tools and equipment required for the above.
License: Possession of valid Class III California Drivers License.

Knowledge of: Basic methods, tools, techniques and materials used in building
maintenaDce and repair work and central stores operation; use and
purposes' of carpentry, electrical, plumbing and other building
maintenance tools and equipment; the operation of a variety of
light power driven equipment, such as foam and steam shampoo
machines, floor cleaning and resurfacing machines; health and
safety practices as required by OSHA; supervision methods;
