HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 6-1981 RESOLUTION NO. 6-81 CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING SYMPATHY AND SUPPORT FOR THE AMERICAN CITIZENS FORMERLY HELD CAPTIVE IN THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY, TEHRAN, IRAN WHEREAS, on November 4, 1979, Iranian revolutionaries, with the apparent support of the then ruling Iranian Government, forcibly entered American soil, to wit: the United States Embassy in Tehran, Iran, and did unlawfully kidnap and take hostage 63 American citizens; and WHEREAS, during the 444 days thereafter, 52 of those American citizens remained in captivity; and WHEREAS, the Iranians mistreated, terrorized and brutalized those American citizens during their captivity; and WHEREAS, all of these acts were done in contravention of hundreds of years of custom and tradition in the international diplomatic community and in violation of international law; and WHEREAS, on April 24, 1980, eight American servicemen lost their lives in an attempt to rescue the Americans held captive; and WHEREAS, in order to preserve the lives of the captive American citizens, it has been necessary for Americans in general to endure the pain and frustra- tion of having to observe these events; and WHEREAS, on January 20, 1981, the last remaining 52 American citizens held captive in the United States Embassy in Tehran were freed and have since returned home. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of South San Francisco that it does express outrage at this heinous act of barbarism by the Iranians, sympathy toward the Americans held in captivity and their families and friends for the pain, suffering and frustration they have endured and will continue to endure as a result of their ordeal, and joy that our fellow Americans have returned home alive, and do express by this resolution our support for them in their efforts to recover. I hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was regularly intro- duced and adopted by the City Council of the City of South San Francisco at a regular meeting held on the 21st day of January . 1981, by the following vote: AYES: Councilmen Mark N. Addiego, Emanuele N. Damonte, Gus Nicolopulos; and Councilwoman Roberta Cerri Teglia and Mayor Acosta NOES: None ABSENT: None City Clerk
