CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
A RESOLUTION AMENDING THE SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO
EMPLOYEE CLASSIFICATION PLAN BY THE MODIFICA-
TION OF CERTAIN CLASS SPECIFICATIONS.
BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of South San Francisco
that the Employee Classification Plan, as amended,'is further amended effective
May 5, 1982, as follows:
The class specifications for the classifications listed below are
hereby mod i f i ed:
a) Firefighter; as set forth in Exhibit "A" attached hereto;.
b) Paramedic/Firefighter; as set forth in Exhibit "B" attached hereto;

DEFINITION
F I REF i GHTER
Under general supervision, to engage in fire fighting, medical aid and
all other suppression and prevention activities in protecting life and
property;, to drive, operate and maintain all fire department apparatus
and equipment; to assist and participate in training programs, to par-
ticipate in inspections and related fire prevention activities; and to
~o related work as requ'ired.

This is the'entry and journey level classification in the fire service
ecomF, a~ing both Firefighter and Fire Engineer duties.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES ' '
Responds to fire alarms, emergency medical calls, emergency rescues,
public service calls, or other alarms which necessitate the mitigating
of a situation which threatens life or property; drives and locates
equipment in the proper place at scene; effects rescues; lays hose lines
and operates apparatus pumps and aerial apparatus; attacks fires and
directs fire streams; applies Basic. Life Support techniques; sets up
intravenous solutions, takes blood .pressures; assists in the connecting
of telemetry'equipment; assists in.the emergency transporting of patients;
operates communications equipment; performs a variety of routine mainte-
nance, and repair tasks, including the inspection and minOr repair of equip-
men.t; participates in inspections and related fire prevention duties;cl~ans:'
stati6ns, quarters and equipment and maintains a clean and orderly condition
in and about the station; studies and reviews fire department rules and
regulations, fire hazards, and fir~ fighting techniques; participates in
drills, training sessions, and exercises; may be assi.gned to prepare vari-
ous reports,..'may be required to respond to alarms during the non-duty
hours when on-duty staff needs to be augmented; ·meets the public and de.~ls
with various officials and citizens in furthering the public relations of

PossesSion of a valid California Class !11 operator's license issued by the
State Department of Motor Vehicles. 'May be required, after employment to
obtain a Class '11 or Class !. license.
Possession of a valid Standard or Advanced First Aid Card issued by the
American Red Cross or equivalent.
Possession of a valid Cardio-Pulmonary ResuScitation (CPR) card issued by
-- the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
Must possess an Emergency Medical Technician I (EMT) or Emergency Medical
Technician I Fire Service (FS) certificatb within one year after appoint-
ment to the classification.

QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to:
Learn fire fighting methods and techniques, the basic operation and
mechanics of fire fighting equipment, streets and locations and the
location of hydrants, mains and major traffic and fire hazards;
Learn to drive and Operate pumpers, trucks, ambulance and aerial
apparatus with care and safety in accordance with traffic laws and
ordinances;
Learn and maintain proficiency in Basic Life Support techniques;
Analyze emergency situations and adopt effective'courses'of .action;
Communicate clearly and effectively;
Think and act quickly in emergencies;
Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with employees,
supervisors and the public.

Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
AGE
Must be a minimum of age 21 and maximum of age 35 at the time of the
examination and appointmen.t.
MEDICAL AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS.
Prior to appointment must meet job related medical, vision and physical
performance standards. May be required after employment to pass periodic
medical, vision and physical performance tests and to participate in an
ongoing physical fitness program.

In addition, as a Paramedic, attends to victims in emergency medical situations
using prescribed paramedic techniques; provides medical aid, administers drugs,
gives in~ections, starts intravenous solutions, takes and monitors vital s. igns
and takes appropriate actiOn to preserve life as prescribed by standing orders,
a doctor or'register'e~l ng'rse via direct radio or telephone contact; operates radio,
telemetry and related medical electronic equipment for monitoring and treatment
of emergency medical victims, records company activities and prepares reports,
participates in training and activities with the Fire Department, hospitals and
--- other agencies; studies and reviews local, county,-state and departmental para-
medic rules, regulations and ordinances; teaches paramedic and EMT skills and
techniques to members of the Fire Department, other agencies and the public.

Possession of a valid California Class III operator's license issued by the

Graduation from a paramedic training that meets the requirements for certi-
fication in San' Mateo County. Certification by the County of San Mateo .is
required prior to appointment.
