CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
A RESOLUTION COMMENDING LURA E. SELLICK AND
DEDICATING A 6.8 ACRE PARCEL OF BLUFF-TOP
LAND OFF APPIAN WAY AS "SELLICK ~PARK''
WHEREAS, Lura E. Sellick, in 1933, after graduating from college, came
to South San Francisco as a Music Teacher at a time when there were very few
parks and playgrounds during the depression; and
WHEREAS, Lura E. Sellick, has dedicated fifty (50) years as a resident
in this City to the enhancement of the quality of life for everyone, and in
particular for 'children; and
WHEREAS, in 1938, she served as a Charter Member of the South San
Francisco Recreation Committee, which was federally funded under President
Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration Program; and
WHEREAS, in 1939, she was instrumental in getting the City and School
District to sign the first Joint Powers Agreement for the development of
cooperative use of play fields and facilities; and
WHEREAS, in 1941, the City Council adopted an Ordinance which was written
by Lura E. Sellick, creating the City's first Parks and Recreation Commission,
which in 1943 set up Recreation Bonds to finance permanent structures in parks;
and
WHEREAS, she was instrumental in 1947 in the creation and the writing of
a job specification for the first permanent and full-time postion of the
Director of Parks and Recreation; and
WHEREAS, Lura E. Sellick, has unselfishly served as Secretary to the
Parks and Recreation Commission since its inception forty-two (42) years ago,
maintaining accurate records which chronicled the development of six (6) City

parks, more than a dozen play lots, an indoor municipal swimming pool,
and the Oyster Point Marina; and
WHEREAS, Lura E. Sellick's other accomplishments include a Bachelor
of Arts Degree from the San Jose State University, and a Master of Science
Degree from Stanford University, at a time when only five hundred (500)
women were admitted;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of South
San Francisco that it does hereby express appreciation to Lura E. Sellick for
her contribution to the City's progress and welfare through her deep commit-
ment to the community and unstinting efforts to the creation of Parks and
Recreational facilities by which she has established a high standard of civic
conduct worthy of emulation by those who desire to contribute to the welfare
of this community, by officially dedicating the 6.8 acre parcel of bluff-top
land off Appian Way in Westborough as "Sellick Park".
I hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was regularly introduced
and adopted by the City Council of the City of South San Francisco at a
regular meeting held on the .6th day of April
1983 by the following vote'
