HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 203-1984 RESOLUTION NO.203-R4 CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA A RESOLUTION COMMENDING WILLIAM R. GERK WHEREAS, William R. Gerk, after faithfully and effectively serving the City and its Fire Department for twenty-three years and seven months, is retiring on December 15, 1984 as Firefighter/Driver~ and WHEREAS, Bill received a Bachelor's Degree in 19~1 and a Master's Degree in 19~2 in Iowa, and after seven Fire Science classes with a grade of all A's, grad- uated in 19~$ with an Associate Arts Degree from the College of San Mateo~ and WHEREAS, he is an active member of the initial Fire Engineer Committee, and has received the South San Francisco Chamber of Commerce Fire Prevention Award] and WHEREAS, he has unselfishly contributed his time to the youth of the City by performing comedy juggling for two consecutive years at the City's elementary schools and has received a plaque from the California State Legislature for out- standing education of children in Fire Prevention] and WHEREAS, William Gerk has demonstrated his interest in the present and future Fire Department Engineers by researching, organizing and writing a book entitled "Fire Engineer Driving", a project which involved nine (9) months of work~ and WHEREAS, he is Past President of the Burlingame Skyline Toastmasters Club, winner of the Toastmasters Humorous Speech Contest for two (2) years in a row, and has been Master of Ceremonies for Fire Department retirement dinners, pro- motions and South San Francisco Fire-Police Basketball games] and WHEREAS, Bill is the current President and founder of the San Mateo Tennis Clubs as well as Past President of the San Francisco Table Tennis Club~ and WHEREAS, his accomplishments in Tennis include winning over twelve (12) medals, four (4) being gold, in the California State Firemen's Olympics; current Cal Firemen's champion in singles forty-five and over; current runner- up in Cal State Fire-Police doubles 45 and over, and defeated the International Police champion in 1982 in singles forty-five and over; and WHEREAS, William Gerk's dream of retirement is to pursue the game of Tennis and win the Grandmasters Tennis singles, over fifty, annual World Championships of Fire and Police; travel, and write another book; and WHEREAS, he has helped protect the City of South San Francisco for more than twenty-three years of service, and his dedication to justice, fairness and high morals are in the highest tradition of the Fire Department; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by 'the City Council of the City of South San Francisco that it does hereby express appreciation to William R. Gerk for his dedicated services to the City of South San Francisco and does order this Reso- lution incorporated in the official records of the City as this Council's expression of appreciation and its wishes for his long and happy retirement. I hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was regularly introduced and adopted by the City Council of the City of South San Francisco at a regular meeting held on the 12th day of December , 19 84 by the following vote: AYES: Councilmembers Mark N.
