HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 190A-1928 (405)180 WHERe-LAS the Pacific Telephone s. nc] Telegraph Company has petitioned the Railraod Comz:~.ission of the State of California to increase the telephone rs~tes in San i-¢rsncisco, 0aklmad,Berkeley,Atameda, Piedment and other communities about San Francisco Bay; and ;~HEREAS this City Co~mcil is advieed that the rs~tes asked by said l~acific Telephone and Telgraph Company are ~elieved to be unfair and e.~ort~itant,and that the rates ps. id in the communities referred to should 'be decreased instead of increased,s.nd could b~ decreased and ~l~x allow the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company to ~.~ake a f~ir return on the C~ ' ~p~tal it has invented,if said Pacific Telephone and Telegraph operated its buisness without paying to the American Tele~bhone and Telegraph of Rew York a'~ny percentage of its gross income yearly and be relieved of the necessity of purchasing al.% their su?plies fror.~ the ;¢estern Electric Company, Incorporated,o~ the State of New York:and ;~HE~.EAS rngSy tele]~hone subscribers in South San Frsncisco will be efi'e$~_by any increase in telephone rates;and '¢¢HEREAS the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Compnay o]~erate ~nd do bu.%.%ness in the Sta~.e of California,Washington,Oregon,Idaho,and Nevada, and ~,this City Council i~ advised that said corporation has cause~i~ the ¥~eople in ~l~e Statesoof ~ashington and Oregon to pay excessive rates for telephone service will,if not restrained,seek to im!~ose unjust,dis- criminatory and unfair telephone rates In all communities where they are engaged in business; NOW?THEREFORE, be it Resolved: Section 1. That ~ongress cause a Federal Investigation of the affairs of the ?~cific Telephone Con~:;any, the American Telephon~ and Te!egra?h Co~.I,~ny,and the "Jestern Electric Comp~ay to be conducted for BRe purposr of ascertaining if the relations between these companies constitute a monopoly in the selling of telephone service throu~fhout the,~°ts. tes of California,Ws~shington, 0regon,IdahR and Nevada and if they so constitute a monpoly that action be taken by Congress to initiate ~ proper proeeeding to terminate the relations ben, ween the America'~n Telephone amd Telegraph Com?any,Eestern L!ectric Co~.~yany and the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Con~yany, SECT~0N 2.
