SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO REQUESTING THAT THE STATE
Dr~ISION OF HIGHW~YS TAKE SUCH ACTION AS SHALL
BE NECFSSARY TO PROVIDE FOR THE IMM~EDIATE
INSTALLATION OF AN ELECTRIC TEAFFIC CONTROL
SYST~ (COMPLETE WITH APPROP~qIATE CHANNELIZATION)
AT THE ,INTERSECTION OF JUNIPERO SEHRA BOULEVARD
AND HICKEY BOULEVA~{D, WHICH LOCATION IS SITUATE
WITHIN THE CONFINES OF THE CITY OF SOUT}{ SAN
FRANCISCO
~HERF~S the Legislature of the S~ate of California has recently enacted
legislation providing for the inclusion of Junipero Serra Boulevard as an integral part of
the System of State Highways of the State of California, which will place said Junipero
Serra Boulevard under the Jurisdiction and supervision of the Division of Highways of the
State of California as of the 5th day of July 1956; and
~EREAS the intersection of Junipero Serra Boulevard with Hickey Boulevard,
which location is situate within the confines of the City of South San Francisco, is a very
hazardous intersection resultin~ from the fact that there takes placeat said point both ~
confluence and division of heavy automoblile traffic, which situation, together with adverse
weather conditions, has been the cause of numereus automobile accidents, there having occurred
at or near said intersection within the past sixteen and one-half (16-1/2) months a total
of forth-three (~3) accidents, as a result of which there were two (2) cases of fatalities,
twenty-five (25). of personal injuries, and sixteen (16) of property damage only, all as shown
by the official records of the Police Department of said City of South San Francisco; and
WHEREAS, in view of the foregoing, the City Council of said City of South
San Francisco does deem it to be in the best inter~st~ of said City and of the general public
that an electric braffic control system (complete wi~ ~pprepriate channeltzation) be installed
at said intersection as soon as possible,
NOW, TH~EFORE, BE IT R~SOLVED by the City Council of the City of South
San Francisco that it is imperative that the Division of Highways of the State of California
be, and it hereby is, requested and urged to undertake the installation of an electric traffic
control system (complete with appropriate channelization), said installation to be made with
the least possible detsy following the inclusion of said Junipero Serra Boulevard within the
System of State Highways of the State of California.
BE IT FURTHER R?SOLVED that the City Clerk shall, and he hereby is instructed
to, forward a certified copy of this resolution te the Division ef Highways of the State of
California, together with a certified copy thereef te B. W. Booker, Assistant State Mi~wsy
Engineer, who is the public official entrusted with the responsibility of, and vested with
the duty to, undertake the installation of said electric traffic control system.
I hereby cerbify bhat the foregoing resolution was regularly introduced
and ~dopted by the City Council of the City of South San Francisco at a regular meeting held
this 21st day of m~y 1956, by the followin~ vote:
