The regular meeting of tile City Council of the City of South San Francisco was held in the city hall, ~londay evening, July el,l~%l. ~lhe meeting was called to order at 8 ' o'clock P.k. by kayor george ¥~.t~olston. ROLL CALL. Roll call found the following members of the council present;- Councelmen, V.soido,George W.Eolston,D.}7.Ratto, Rod Tibbetts. Absent, Councilman Reese Lloyd. The minutes of the previous meeting were read. There being no errors or omissions they were approved ~s read. Sieur? tan Francisco Grove No.171,Ancient Order of Druids applied for permission to hold joint %get~ Celebration on the third, fourth, and fifth days of October, leal, with the Druid: of San ~'ateo County and Regina Elena Circle No.97, Druidesses of South. ~an Francisco, the selection and coronation of a Queen Senorita, and the holding of a Grand ~all on Sunday,the lsst day of the Celebration. Councilman Ratto moved the desired permission be granted. 'IRe motion was seconded by councilman Boido and regularly carried. A cor0munication was received from William Augustus,County Clerk,on request of the Board , Supervisors of San ;~ateo County, advising'tDat the ~ity of South San Francisco select a repro. sentative to the San ~ateo County Defense Council.. kayor Eolston requested the city clerk to co~sult the count2 clerk further to ascertain what duties the representative would have to po: form or about the amount of time he would have to devote to the work, before appointing anyon~ ~'~i~aury Schwarz applied for a license to conduct Amateur Boxing in Fraternal Hall. Referred to Chief of Police Belloni. Renns ;~,~anbeck,Brisbane, applied for a license to conduct a restaurant at lO{6 Bayshore Highway, in the premises of Jo~n Ruggierio. Laid over. A communication was received from the Defense Housing Council of South San Francisco, _asking for the sum of .i.~0 as a working suam to help and boost for an appropriation from the · "ederal Government for Defense Housing needs, stating the Cit}~ of Richmond, California,has received the sum of {~1,~00,000 to build a certain clgss of housesfor workingmen working in defense projects, assuring them of low rents, or low cost houses, and close to their places o employment. Councilman Soido moved that the amount be granted. The motion was seconded by councilman Tibbetts and regularly carried, after a provision by Councilman Ratto that the be submitted for the Cit}. Clerk's inspection. A communication was received from ~,,lr.0.E.01eson,Chairman of t~e Redwood City Fourth of Jul Celebration Committee, extending the thanks of the committee to t e City of South San i~ancis for their cooperation at the celebration. Communication accepted and placed on file. ~A card of acknowledgment was received from Joe Quaresima for the floral piece sent by the city on the death of his wife. Accepted and filed/ The Burlingame Advance submitted a statement showing that the Advance would be the offioi newspaper on the 8~ th annivarsary of the birth, of San mateo and the llth AnnualTFiesta, and requested the city to take a ~i~100 page ~.dvertisement for the edition. Fire Chief Welte submitted the names of Albert Sargenti and John Kritz for appointment to the call forces of the fire department. Councilman Ratto moved that the men be appointed. The motion was seconded by Councilman Tibbetts and regularly c~rried. A communication was received from the South San Francisco Planning Commission stating tha at a meeting of their body June o, 8,1~J{l,thay had unanimousl~ approved the map and plans desi and ~submttted b}~ City Engineer karshall at the suggestion and recom~r~endation of the Planning C omm'X s sion. C ommunication filed. B'ethleham Steel Corporation submitted a bid of .~1%.S0 per gross ton of o,~{0 pounds for th steel rails recently taken up on Grand Avenue. Communication ordered filed. A request was made by Alphonse Ferrari to the city to remove the red. parking sign in fron of his property on Grand Avenue and Sayshore ~iighway~ stating t?~e sign deters persons from entering the place of business. After discussion Councilman Boido moved that all t}~e re~ but o~0 feet be removed from the curb. Edna Broner, Librarian, submitted the monthly report ~of her office for the month ending June Z0,1~l. Councilman Ratto moved that the report be accepted as read. Councilman Boido introduced a resolution of the city council of the Cit~ of South San Francisco changing the name of the portion of Orange Avenue extending Westerly from the southerly boundary line .of Railroad Avenue to the name of West Orange Avenue. Engineer karshall will consult the State authorities and report back to the cit~ council. Engineer ~,srskall stated ti-e rails on Grand Ave. would be removed as far west ss the west side of t~iaple, for the present,as far as he could learn from tls 'Ji~. authorities, ie reported also t~at the bi~ interests had submitted a plan of constructing a large settling oasin to control tbs waters coming down from the hills in the vicinity of the packing houses ~on east Grand Avenue. E.Cornblum of the Lifton Company appeared before the city council and requested help in securing a proper alig~ent of the sewers in the district where ~e is constructing many new homes,and also in the repair of streets w~:ere the top surface has disappeared.The 6ity Council agreed to meet with him in the mornin[[ at 10 o'clock A.I¥[, and ~o over the grounds and ascer- tain what could be done by ti.e cit~ for the builders. Councilman ooido moved that the salary of Art]~ur kodondi be raised from ,~100 per month to ~190 per montL,co~mencing August 1,1941. Joe Rodondi reported windows broken and much ~ust on t~e window panes and house next the the Linden Avenue playgrounds.
