W. Holston, Ghee. K. Elder, Leo Ferko, Adolph Sani, Emilio ~ Cortesi. Meeting was called.to order at 8:00 o'clock p.$.~ The City Clerk having forwarded copy of the minutes of the meetings of July 7th, 8th, and 9th to all members of the City Council, Mayor Ferko asked if any omissions or errors were noted. There being none the minutes were approved as submitted. Communication was recei~e~ from the Housing Authority of South San Francisco relative to trailers parked on the school property. Mr. McLeod, of the School Board, was present and stated no written agreement had been made with the War Assets Administration. He stated the School Board had contacted the War Assets Administration asking that the trailers be removed but nothing had been heard so far. He would bring the matter before the School Board at the meeting July 22nd and would advise the results. The Housing Authority communication was held over pending report from Mr. McLeod. Communication was received from the P. G. & E. O~mpam~,~r$~ative to electric lighting in the Buri Buri Subdivision. Same was ordered filed. Communication was received from the Recreation Commission requesting that the lights be turned on at the Linden Avenue Playground. As the matter of renting of these grounds had not been definitly settled, this communication was laid over for further consideratiom. Communication was received from the Recreation Commission requesting that salaries in the 19~7-1948 budget, as proposed by the Commission, be ~etained. This communication was ordered filed. Communication was received from the Recreation Commission with reference to the use of Tanforan Navy Base as a recreation comber and suggesting that the San Mateo County Recreation Commission be contacted regarding the use of this building as a recreational area for the northern end of the County. Motion was regularly made, seconded and carried that th~ Oouncil. favor the recommendation of the Recreation Commission and approve its contacting the San Mateo CountY Commission requesting the use of the Tanforan Navy Base. Communication was received fram the City of San Bruno enclosing copy of letter from residents on Pacific Avenue in San Bruno complaining of noise at the California Wire Cloth Co. during the late hours of the night. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried, that the City Clerk communicate with the California Wire Cloth Co. asking that this noise be abated. Communication was received from the Personnel Board requesting information regarding the reducing of residence of applicants, for positions with the City, from 3 years to 18 months. City Clerk was instructed to advise the Personnel Board that this matter was being taken under consideration and they. would be advised at a later date of the action taken. Communication was received from the Personnel Board advising that Anna MeCourt had re- ceived a final rating of 80.7% in her examination for Junior Librarian and recommended that she be appointed permanently to this position. Motion was duly made, seconded a~d carried, that the recommendation of the Personnel Board be accepted and the Library Board be so advised. Communication ~as received from the United Steelworkers of America asking that the City adopt an ordinance regulating hotel rentals in the City. This communication was held over for further study. Communication was received from Alfred Bertetta relative to the water situation in the Duck Ranch area. He stated people in this section were desirous of annexing to the city. This matter was laid over for further consideration. Communication was received from the Booster's Club thanking the Mayor and City Council for their assistance in the Booster's Club Fiesta. Same was ordered filed. Communication was received from the Works Engineer asking authorization to start a survey to determine how much storm water could be eliminated from %he treatment plant. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried,~that the Works Engineer be granted authorization to make a 30 day survey and at the end of that time bring in an estimate of final cost. · Works Engineer advised that Brentwood No. 2 had requested that the limits of work be extended to include the paving of that area adjacent to E1 Camino Real and south of', Brentwood Drive. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried, that same be granted. Communication was received from the Works Engineer relative to water near Mayfair Village. City Clerk was instructed toadvise City Park Improvement Club regarding the ~?orks En- gineer's findings. Communication was received from the Works Engineer advising that the State Highway Commission had corrected the catchbasin condition on Bayshore near Randolph. Same was ordered filed. Bill for $900.O0 was received from the Three Cities Mosquito A~atement District. As this amount seemed excessive the matter was referred to Health Inspector Sch~..a~m. .~ ~ .~' Communication was recei~.~ from Superintendent of Streets Schweining recommending the acceptance of the ~asketball Courts in Orange Avenue Park. As Recreation Superintendent Pless was not satiefied with the work, this matter was held up. Buri Buri Homes, Inc. requested permission to erect a super market in Block 1. PARK MEMORIAL PARK: ADJOURNMENT: Hawley Industries requested permission to erect a building on South Maple Avenue. was duly made, seconded and carried, that permit be granted subject to approval of Building Inspector. Motion E. P. Kauffmann requested permission to remove dwelling from 217 Third Lane and to erect a ware house thereon'. Motion was duly made, 's~conded and carried, that permit be granted. Hanson Srothers requested permission to move a house from 217 Third Lane to Elmer's Flower Shop at Holy C~o~s Cemetery.' Motion was duly made, seconded and carried, that permit be granted subject to deposit of $500.00 bond. United Packing Co. requested permission to install a Truck Scale in front of their ware- hous% on East Grand Avenue over the City sewer. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that permit be granted subject to revocation. Buckbee Thorne & To. requested permission to erect a sign on property on East Grand Ave. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried, that permit be granted. Howard L. Dalton applied for license to open doughnut and coffee shop at 219 Linden Ave. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried, that permit be granted. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that $25.00 a~ be subscribed for in the Labor Day edition of the California Labor Review. Reports for the month of June were sbbmitted by the Library Board and City Clerk. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried, that sa~e be approved as submitted. Claims in the amount of $3820.59 were presented to the Finance Committee for approval. On motion duly made, seconded and regularly carried, the claims as submitted were ordered paid. Chief of Police Louis Belloni advised he had aPpointed the following Guards: Earl Erick- son, Clarence ~nitcomb, John Marvin Daugherty, Homer Morrison, Ernest Boesen, Walter Van Ness, Arthur Condron, Thomas Murray, Motion was duly made, seconded and carried, that the appointments as submitted by the Chief of Police be con'firmed, the men to act without remuneration from the city. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that action of the City Council at the meeting of July 7th, approving payment of $15'00 to the Division of Highways, be rescinded. City Clerk was instructed to advise Buri Buri of the State Highways request. Communication was received from the City Planning Commission enclosin~ two resolutions, one' resolution setting the dates for hearing on master plan for zoning the city, and one reCommending the rezoning of Lots 72 and 73 in South City Village. Councilman Elder introduced a resolution providing for a notice of hearing the proposition to rezone Lots 72 and 73, South City Village. This resolution was adopted by the unanimou: vote of all members bf the City Council. Fire Chief Welte was asked to contact Architect Rowe with regard to figures for the proposed bohd issue. 'CouncilmAn Sani brought up the matter of noise on Railroad Ave. during the night caused by the Southern Pacific Co. switching cars. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried, that the City Clerk write to Mr. Jordan of the Southern Pacific Co. requesting abatement of this noise. Councilman Cortesi moved, secOnded by Councilman Sani, that the paving of Mission Road be completed. Motion was regularly carried. Mayor Ferko brought up the matter of the changing the name of Orange Avenue Park to Memorial Park and dedicating same to the boys that lost their lives in World Wars 1 and 2; also suggested that a monument and a flag pole be erected. Fire Chief Welte suggested thatthe erection of the monument be paid for by public subscription. The Mayor agreed with this and stated he would appoint ~ subscription committee. Recreation Superintendent Pless, on behalT of the Recreation Committee, extended an invitation to the Council members to attend the baseball game on Friday,July 25th at 10:00 o'clock at the Orange Ave. Park.
