CALL TO ORDER: 6:30 p.m. II. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Boldenweck, Gekker, Ventura, Hobson-Coard, Looper, Madrid Nickle, Moncé and Woo Absent: Commissioner Pettinari Staff Present: Sharon Ranals, Director of Park and Recreation Samantha Haimovitch, Parks Manager Ercie Santos, Cultural Arts Specialist Marie Patea, Administrative Assistant III. AGENDA REVIEW: Addition of VII. 8. Collaboration with P&R Commission IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Commissioners Boldenweck and Woo approved the minutes of January 19, 2017; as presented; unanimous V. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION: Photography Exhibit Participants were acknowledged and took photographs with Chair Moncé. Josie Johansen, Patti Zuniga, and Jay attended and provided details on their photographs. VI. OLD BUSINESS: None VII. SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS: 1. Sculpture Commissioner Looper had nothing to report. Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of February 16, 2017 Page 2 2. Utility Box Mural Program Specialist Santos reported on behalf of Commissioner Pettinari, that certificates of achievement were presented to muralists by Commissioner Boldenweck during the photography show. A video footage of the murals was playing during the event and special buttons were created for the muralists to wear. 3. Youth Art Scholarship Commissioner Woo approved the verbiage for scholarship application and highlighted that the recipient will win a minimum of $500. 4. Photography Show (February 10 & 11) Commissioner Hobson-Coard reported the following statistics: 39 exhibits, 18 artists, 17 attendees, 4 pieces sold, 8 awards, 1 judge and 6 finalists. A performing arts group named Americano Social Club Trio performed. The extended exhibit is in the atrium window until March 2. Two letters were received after the show. One was positive and one negative. The Commissioners agreed to consider two judges in the future to prevent style bias. Commissioner Looper requested that staff respond to the letter, noting that the Commission will take the suggestions into consideration when selecting the judges. Commissioner Gekker arrived at this time; 6:48 p.m. 5. Youth Art Show (March 31 & April 1) Specialist Santos reported that the next meeting is February 27, with the visual arts committee of SSFUSD. She noted that the performing arts presentation will take place on Friday, March 31 but not ballet. SSFUSD is planning to host a crafts table on Saturday, April 1; noting that teachers are enthusiastic about the show. 6. Fundraiser (August 27) Chair Moncé had no update at this time. 7. Performing Arts Chair Hobson-Coard had no update. 8. Collaboration with P&R Commission Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of February 16, 2017 Page 3 Commissioner Woo reported that collaboration opportunities are as follows: May 6 at Streets Alive/Parks Alive, Movie Nights, Halloween Extravaganza, and Santa Comes to Town. The two commissions can host a crafts table together. Commissioner Looper suggested that Parks and Recreation Commissioners should attend Cultural Arts exhibits and fundraising event. Commissioner Woo will ask for Parks and Recreation for support Cultural Arts events. VIII. NEW BUSINESS: None IX. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION: 1. Commissioner Ventura introduced Kent Madrona. He is a student of her performing arts group. He is a musician, attends UC Berkeley, and volunteers at Skyline College. On December 2, Commissioner Ventura’s play begins at SSFHS. X. ITEMS FROM STAFF 1. Specialist Santos circulated a goals questionnaire update and invited Commissioners to contact her with feedback. XI. CORRESPONDECE: Posted XII.
