I. CALL TO ORDER: 6:30 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL:
Present: Commissioners Boldenweck, Hobson-Coard, Looper, Moncé and
Woo
Absent: Commissioner Pettinari, Madrid Nickle, Gekker, and Ventura
Staff Present: Sharon Ranals, Director of Park and Recreation
Samantha Haimovitch, Parks Manager
Ercie Santos, Cultural Arts Specialist

III. AGENDA REVIEW:
No changes
IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Minutes from February 16, 2017, were approved unanimously with the correction of an
artist’s name under Citizen Participation.
V. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION:
None
VI. OLD BUSINESS:
None
VII. SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS:
1. Sculpture
Commissioner Looper reported that a sculpture call for entry has been posted to the
City website. The deadline for entries is May 10, 2017. She mentioned a couple
artists from the Sebastopol area that may submit entries. Ned Kahn creates art for

wind and an artist that creates marbled totem poles. Director Ranals requested that
staff adds artist contact information to Parks and Recreation database.
2. Youth Art Scholarship
Commissioner Woo reported that applications have been distributed and also posted
on the City website and thanked Specialist Santos for her work. Chair Moncé agreed
to present scholarships at South San Francisco High School on May 9, and El
Camino High School on May 16. Baden High School awards ceremony details are
forthcoming.
3. Youth Art Show (March 31 & April 1)
Commissioner Woo reported that the performing arts performance will occur on
Friday at 6pm. Chair Moncé offered to be the master of ceremony for the
performance.
4. Fundraiser (August 27)
Chair Moncé asked the Commissioners to think about tasks that they are interested in
leading to support the fundraiser. Some of the tasks suggested were as follows: food,
raffle, tickets, shopping, decorations, entertainment and beverages.
5. Collaboration with P&R Commission
Commissioner Woo had nothing to report.
6. Performing Arts
Chair Hobson-Coard had no update.
VIII. NEW BUSINESS:
None
IX. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION:
Commissioner Looper inquired about the beautiful butterfly artwork that was in the
Butterfly Room. She asked about how many pieces we have. Director Ranals
reported that the pieces are safe and hopes that they will be incorporated into the
new Parks and Recreation Civic Center. She welcomed the Commission to suggest
other locations in the meantime.

X. ITEMS FROM STAFF
Manager Haimovitch requested to add Art Tile Subcommittee to the next agenda.
She noted that the Alta Loma Park construction kickoff meeting is March 21, 2017.
Specialist Santos distributed the Goals/Committees 2017 list. She highlighted the
atrium window was decorated by the childcare division and it looks great. The
window theme is murals, sculptures and landmarks throughout South San Francisco.
The display will stay up through the Youth Art Show. She circulated information
about the kids’ poster contest for Kindergarten through fifth grade. The theme is
Help Keep SSF Clean! The deadline to enter is May 31, 2017, and this contest is
through the City Manager’s office. As in the past, Commissioners may be asked to
assist with judging. Specialist Santos made the Commission aware that the
California Arts Commission is experiencing defunding. The de Young has Bouquets
to Art 2017 exhibit from March 14 – 19, that showcases floral design with paintings.
Director Ranals reported that the dragon sculpture is in process of installation at the
corner of West Orange Avenue and Westborough Boulevard.
Manager Haimovitch noted that the planting is planned and will begin soon around
the crane sculptures on Junipero Serra Boulevard and Hickey Boulevard; now that
the weather is improving.
Director Ranals introduced Tony Rozzi, Senior Planner and noted that he will
present to the Commission at an upcoming meeting. He has an update on the
Caltrain Station Plaza and possible art opportunities.
