CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION MEETING
CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO
Thursday, October 19, at 6:30 p.m.
Municipal Services Building – Betty Weber Room

I. CALL TO ORDER: 6:30 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL:
Present: Commissioners Moncé, Looper, Madrid-Nickle, Gekker, Woo,
Ventura, and Hobson-Coard
Absent: Commissioners Pettinari and Commissioner Boldenweck
Staff Present: Sharon Ranals, Director of Parks and Recreation
Ercie Santos, Cultural Arts Specialist
Susan Filereto, Administrative Assistant

IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Minutes from September 21, 2017, stand as written.
V. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION:
None
VI. OLD BUSINESS:
1. Selection of final 2018 Art Gallery Show
There was a discussion and it was decided that the General Art Show would be
combined with the Karaoke Night in May and that the Floral Design Show would be held
on October 12 and 13. Commissioner Woo made a motion to approve the decision and
Commissioner Gekker seconded the motion and it was unanimous.
VII. SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS:
1. Sculpture
Commissioner Looper had no new update.
Director Ranals reported an informal letter was sent to City Council for the purchase of
Ron Burgess’s paintings. She heard nothing against the purchase, so a purchase
agreement is currently being prepared. She stated the purchase of the recommended

sculptures would have to be presented at a City Council Meeting because of the
significant cost of the sculptures
2. Quilt Show (October 13 & 14)
Special Santos reported they received a total of 35 quilts and 77 guests signed the
guestbook. The Betty Weber room featured a special vintage and holiday fiber arts
display designed by the Greenhouse Quilters. The Quilters also had a holiday boutique in
the atrium. They donated $285.00 to the Commission.
3. Event Collaboration with P&R Commission
Commissioner Woo thanked her fellow Commissioners Ventura, Gekker, and
Boldenweck for helping out at the Concert in the Park. She reminded the Commission
that they were sponsoring a craft table at the Halloween Extravaganza. The crafts
selected were pumpkin cut-outs, decorating pirate eye patches and coloring sheets.
Commissioner Woo also asked for volunteers. Commissioner Ventura stated she would
assist.
4. Performing Arts
Vice Chair Hobson-Coard had no update at this time.
VIII. NEW BUSINESS:
1. Commission Atrium Window Exhibit (January 2018)
Specialist Santos stated the Municipal Services Building atrium window is available in
January for a group exhibit of Commission art. Commissioners agreed to support a
display in January. Specialist Santos would provide more details at next meeting.
IX. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION:
Vice-Chair Hobson-Coard reported that she will have a one woman art exhibit of 25
pieces of art at the Redwood City, City Hall of Justice, from November to January Her
show is titled Tropical Breeze. The hours of the exhibit are Monday through Friday 8:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and the admission is free. She also stated all her art is for sale.
X. ITEMS FROM STAFF:
Specialist Santos highlighted the second of a two-part Public Art Workshop Event coming
up on October 24, at the Burlingame Recreation Center.
Specialist Santos also informed the Commission that the Halloween Extravaganza was
happening Saturday, October 21, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. She stated they were
entitled to two tickets each and could obtain them from Administrative Assistant Susan
Filereto. She also invited Commissioners on a tour of the haunted house after the meeting.

XII. CORRESPONDECE:
Posted
Commissioner Ventura invited fellow Commissioners and staff to the December 2
performance of her musical Christmas in My Hometown. She distributed flyers and
complimentary tickets.
XIII. ADJOURNMENT:
Chair Moncé adjourned the meeting at 6:47 p.m.
