CALL TO ORDER: 6:32 p.m. II. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Boldenweck, Moncé, Looper, Gekker, Woo, Ventura, and Hobson-Coard Absent: Commissioner Madrid-Nickle Staff Present: Greg Mediati, Parks Manager Ercie Santos, Cultural Arts Specialist Susan Filereto, Administrative Assistant III. AGENDA REVIEW: No changes. IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes from January 18, 2018, stand as sent. Please note that Commissioner Moncé arrived at 6:35 p.m. after roll call was taken. V. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION: N/A VI. PRESENTATION: Photography Show Finalists Chair Hobson-Coard presented certificates to two of the Photography Show finalists. Accepting the acknowledgement for Bill Shupp, was his wife, Peggy. He was awarded second place for his photo titled, “Phases of the Eclipse” and third place for “Lookout.” Bridget Bossier received Honorable Mention for her photo “Smiles.” Photographs were taken with Chair Hobson-Coard. Specialist Santos stated that their photos would be on display in the Municipal Services Building atrium display window until March 9. VII. OLD BUSINESS: 1. 2018 Subcommittee Members Confirmation Chair Hobson-Coard asked the Commission for confirmation of the 2018 Subcommittee members. Commissioner Woo stated Commissioner Madrid-Nickle would chair the Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of February 18, 2018 Page 2 Utility Box Mural Project. Commissioner Ventura stated that she would volunteer for the Performing Arts and Youth Art Scholarship sub-committees. Commissioner Gekker stated that she would be a member of the Fundraiser Subcommittee. Vice Chair Boldenweck stated that she would be a member of the Youth Art Scholarship Subcommittee. Commissioner Woo advised discontinuing the Event Collaboration with the Parks and Recreation Commission subcommittee due to lack of participants. Regarding the Parks and Recreation Commission, Parks Manager Mediati indicated that he was only aware that Commissioner Holt was unable to continue. Commissioner Moncé requested that she be removed from the Performing Arts Subcommittee. VIII. SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS: 1. Sculpture Commissioner Looper stated that she had nothing to report at this time. To Commissioner Gekker’s inquiry regarding the locations, Parks Manager Mediati responded that locations had been approved by the City Council. Orange Slices would be at placed at the end of the Sculpture Garden. Windswept would be on Westborough Boulevard, west side of the freeway and the Popsicles would be installed at the end of Orange Park. Landscape Architect Gilchrist is working with engineers on the footing for the sculptures. He anticipates the installation will occur in June, weather permitting. 2. Utility Box Mural Program Commissioner Woo reiterated that Commissioner Madrid-Nickle is pleased to be the chair of the Utility Box Mural Project. 3. Youth Art Scholarship Specialist Santos distributed the 2018 Application form for the Jack Drago Cultural Arts Commission Youth Art Scholarship. 4. Photography Show (February 9 & 10) Chair Hobson-Coard reported that there were eighty entries of which five were Commissioner and employee entries. Thirty-three artists participated. Seventy five guests signed the guestbook. Professional photographer, Scott Buschman judged the exhibit. There were seven awarded entries and four pieces were sold. She also stated that this show had nearly double the entries from 2017 and that she heard good comments from the guests. Commissioners were all in agreement that the photos were very well displayed. 5. Youth Art Show (March 23 & 24) Commissioner Woo stated that the Youth Art Show was highlighted in the City Newsletter. She also passed around the docent list. Specialist Santos distributed Youth Art Show flyers. 6. General Art Show (May 11 & 12) Vice Chair Hobson-Coard reported that the preparations are proceeding. Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of February 18, 2018 Page 3 7. Karaoke Night (May 11) Chair Hobson-Coard reported that they are researching Karaoke venues for ideas. She also requested donated prop items such as: boas, party hats, etc. from her fellow commissioners. Parks Manager Mediati indicated that he would check on the possibility of borrowing a few of the Halloween Extravaganza props in response to Commissioner Woo’s inquiry. To the discussion on judging the event, Chair Hobson-Coard suggested the initial presentation should be a fun and relaxed experience. She stated that she would like to give the participants Certificates of Appreciation. Commissioner Looper suggested badges. 8. Event Collaboration with P&R Commission Commissioner Woo reiterated her suggestion regarding discontinuing the Event Collaboration Subcommittee with the Park and Recreation Commission. Parks Manager Mediati responded that this item would be discussed at the March Parks and Recreation meeting, since the February meeting is cancelled. Following discussion, later in the meeting, the Commission decided to discontinue the Event Collaboration with Park and Recreation Commission Subcommittee. Consensus was that it could be reinstated in the future if there was interest. NEW BUSINESS: N/A IX. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION: Commissioner Woo stated that she would like to discuss the October 12 and 13 art gallery show at the March meeting. X. ITEMS FROM STAFF: 1. Measure W Parks Manger Mediati reported that the architect has been chosen for the Community Center which is Smith Group. One building will contain the Recreation Division and Library sharing the space and facilities. He stated that they are in the programming phase right now. Commissioner Looper asked how the building facilities will be allocated. He reported that Recreation will have the same amount of space that they have right now. The library will have a little more space based on metric study. He also stated that Recreation will be sharing rooms with the library. He reported that the building completion is expected to occur by 2021/2022. The Commission voiced their desire for more community art and recreation space within the new building. Parks Manager Mediati stated that both Director Ranals and Pro Tempore Matsumoto are both voicing their support for these services. He reported that one option included more space for either a Fitness Area or Performing Arts. Commissioner Gekker stated that it would be worthwhile to consider including dedicated art display cases that can be locked. The Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of February 18, 2018 Page 4 Commission requested that they be notified of upcoming meetings. They want to voice their opinion on what they would like in the new building. Specialist Santos stated that the dedication of Alta Loma Park dedication will not occur in March. It might take place in April, with the date to be determined. However, the IPP Planting event would still occur on March 3. Parks Manager Mediati stated that the delay of Alta Loma Park Dedication was due to a drainage issue that has now been resolved. Specialist Santos also reported that there is a department spotlight in honor of Jacquelyn Pettinari on the first page of the Spring 2018 Leisure Guide. She also stated that on page 39 of the Spring Leisure Guide the General Art Show and Karaoke Night were spotlighted. XII. CORRESPONDECE: Posted . XIII.
