I. CALL TO ORDER: 6:30 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL:
Present: Commissioners Boldenweck, Hobson-Coard, Madrid-Nickle,
Moncé, Looper, Woo, and Ventura
Absent: None
Staff Present: Sharon Ranals, Director of Parks and Recreation
Ercie Santos, Cultural Arts Specialist
Susan Filereto, Administrative Assistant
III. AGENDA REVIEW: No changes.
IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Minutes from April 19, 2018, stand as sent.
Please note that Commissioner Ventura arrived at 6:50 p.m. and Commissioner Woo
arrived at 7:00 p.m. after roll call was taken
V. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION:
A. Jack Drago Cultural Arts Commission Youth Art Scholarship Award to Ziqi Li of
South San Francisco High School
Chair Hobson-Coard presented the award to Ziqi Li.
B. General Art Show Finalists Recognition
Chair Hobson-Coard presented certificates to the following artists:
Rita Barichievich, Avelina Leanos, Ellen Lee, Linda Petrocchi, Allen Sinor, Susan Tai,
Latifa Apatira, Jitendra Tandel, Jerilynn Matteo, and Scott Sinor.
Photographs of the award recipients with Chair Hobson-Coard were taken after both
presentations.

VI. OLD BUSINESS:
1. Selection of October 12 & 13 Art Gallery Program
Vice-Chair Boldenweck reported that she and staff met with Evangelina Portillo, the San
Mateo County Fair consultant for the fair’s Day of the Dead art exhibit. Ms. Portillo was
very receptive to assisting with a SSF Arts Commission Day of the Dead exhibition.
After discussion, Commissioner Looper made a motion to approve the Day of the Dead
Art Gallery Show for October 12th and October 13th. Commissioner Moncé seconded the
motion, and it was unanimously approved by a roll call vote.
VII. SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS:
1. Sculpture
Director Ranals reported that all three sculptures, Popsicle, Windswept, and Orange
Slices should be installed by the end of June. She reported that Landscape Architect
Gilchrist was working with the artists on scheduling the date. She also stated the Public
Works was working on the pads for the sculptures, and that the Parks Department would
be doing the installation. Commissioner Looper inquired about the particulars regarding
the unveiling of the sculptures. Director Ranals stated it would depend on how close the
installation was to the actual dedication of the sculptures
2. Utility Box Mural Program
Commissioner Madrid-Nickle stated there was no update.
3. Youth Art Scholarship
Commissioner Ventura reported that Ziqi Li did not attend the school awards ceremony
Commissioner Ventura stated she would be present at the next Council Meeting for the
acknowledgement to Ziqi Li.
4. General Art Show (May 11 & May 12)
Vice-Chair Hobson Coard reported the show went very well and received lots of positive
feedback. She reported there were 45 exhibits and 127 guests that signed the guestbook.
Fifteen exhibits received awards. She also stated there was an extended exhibit of sixteen
paintings hanging in the atrium window. She thanked everyone for a job well done.
5. Karaoke Night (May 11)
Chair Hobson-Coard reported the show went very well. She received a lot of positive
feedback. She reported they had 21 participants and there were approximately 65 people
in the audience. Guests suggested that they present a karaoke night again.
Commissioner Looper stated that having the Karaoke event going on at the same time as
the art show encouraged the visual artists to stay. Commissioner Looper mentioned that
it would be nice if the performances could be heard in the atrium.

6. Fundraiser BBQ (August 26)
Commissioner Moncé reported that the Fundraiser will be on Sunday, August 26th from
12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Adult tickets will be $15.00 and children’s tickets will be $5.00.
She stated the sign-up list will be available at the next meeting. Commissioner Looper
suggested having a karaoke at the event.
VIII. NEW BUSINESS:
1. Cancellation of Summer Meeting
Director Ranals stated that in past years they have either cancelled the July or August
meeting. After discussion, it was decided to cancel the July meeting. Commissioner
Woo moved to cancel the July meeting. Commissioner Looper seconded the motion,
and it was unanimously approved.
IX. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION:
Commissioner Looper asked again regarding the status of the Evohelix’s rusting issues.
Director Ranals stated Facilities Manager Brian Crume is working on this issue. She
stated the original company they had found may be able to repair the sculpture. Vice
Chair Boldenweck asked about the cost of repair. Director Ranals stated a couple of
thousand dollars.
Commissioner Woo asked about doing an art table at June 15th’s Movie Night. Director
Ranals stated there are activities happening that night, but she would check with Devin
Stenhouse, Aquatics Supervisor who is in charge of the event.
Commissioner Woo also asked about the two vacancies they have. Director Ranals stated
it was up to the City Clerk to schedule recruitment which encompasses recruitment for
several commissions at the same time.
X. ITEMS FROM STAFF:
Specialist Santos informed the Commission that the next Citizen’s Academy will occur
on May 24th. It will be presented by the Parks and Recreation Department. The academy
will run from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Specialist Santos stated that she would prepare and
host a Cultural Arts information table. She encouraged Commissioners to attend. Chair
Hobson-Coard and Commissioner Moncé stated they would attend.
Director Ranals stated there was a new procedure on how Commissioner meeting
attendance is monitored. Departmental staff liaisons have been asked to assist in tracking
and notifying Commissioners regarding absences on a rolling 12 month basis. She stated

if any commissioner had more than two absences, staff is to bring it to the attention of the
Commissioner. When three meetings have been missed staff is to alert City Manager’s
office, and the Mayor may elect to contact the Commissioner regarding their status on the
Commission. Director Ranals just wanted the Commission to be aware of this revised
procedure.
XI. ADJOURNMENT:
Chair Hobson-Coard adjourned the meeting at 7:17 p.m.
