HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 2019.07.09 @700 MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO GENERAL PLAN UPDATE COMMUNITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE Meeting held at: MUNICIPAL SERVICES BUILDING, POLICE TRAINING ROOM 33 ARROYO DRIVE SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94080 Tuesday, July 9, 2019 7:00 p.m. Call to Order Meeting called to order at 7:05 p.m. Roll Call COMMITTEE PRESENT: Rehman Baig, Roderick Bovee, Kristy Camacho, Robert Cavalieri, Nicholas Maiden, Sophie Martin, Patricia Murray, Julie Ann Murphy, Sam Shihadeh, John Skerry, Steven Yee, Bill Zemke ALTERNATE PRESENT: Alan Wong, Courtney McCrane ABSENT: Roderick Bovee, Betty Battaglia, Eddie Flores Public Comment None. Consent calendar 1. Approval of the Meeting Minutes of June 11, 2019 MOTION Committee Member Bill Zemke moved and Committee Member Kristy Camacho seconded a motion to approve the meeting minutes of June 11, 2019 as corrected. The motion carried unanimously New Business 2. Overview of Demographic and Socio-Economic Trends Matt Raimi provided an overview of South San Francisco demographics and socio-economic trends. Committee discussion:  Would like to see a break down of demographics by home ownership and home ownership and rental trends.  Would like to see % of residents that are college educated.  Curious on the information on living with in-laws, are more adult children also living at home.  Committee members noted that the demographic data tracks with their experience in the city and its interesting to see how the demographics are distributed in the city.  As housing prices increase, see a trend to more educated and higher income resident.  Need to consider outreach targeted at a large ethnic group that is underrepresented (Hispanic population).  It was noted that the Asian population is made up of many distinct communities.  It will be interested to see changes with the next census results for the areas with new development.  Would like to see how SSF compares to adjacent cities.  Would like additional information on commute trends. Matt Raimi noted that approximately 92% of SSF residents work elsewhere.  Would like to understand why residents chose SSF to live and if they plan to stay here 10 – 20 years.  Would like to see local business and jobs trends and how many locally owned business. 3. Overview of the Final Stakeholder Meeting List and Branding Matt Raimi unveiled the new General Plan update logo. David Javid provided an overview of planned stakeholder meetings, noting that over 100 individuals have been identified to contact. The meetings will be scheduled at the end of July and will consists of individual and small group in-person interviews. Committee members discussed modified stakeholder questions as follows:  What makes SSF special?  What should stay the same or be preserved?  Asking about future vision seems to open ended.  Ask – how is the City failing you today and what can the City do better?  Reach out to homeless population?  What City services will you need in 20 years? 4. Overview of Neighborhood Meetings Dave Javid provided an overview of the planned sub-area (neighborhood) meetings. The meetings will be conducted during mid-August through mid-September. In response to a question, he noted that the meetings will be held in large city facilities and school sites. One postcard announcing all the meetings will be mailed out. Pop-up meetings will also be conducted during this timeframe. It was noted that similar questions will be asked at the sub-area meetings as will be discussed with stakeholders. 5. Updated CAC Schedule Overview David Javid provided an overview of upcoming CAC meetings including a Community forum in October. Community forums will includes experts on topics of larger community interest. The first forum will cover emerging trends in mobility in October and the second will cover housing affordability and gentrification in January 2020. It was noted that housing legislation and the City’s RHNA requirements should be added with the housing information. Committee members also noted areas for additional research or discussion:  How will growth impact schools? Understand what percent of the population choses schools outside SSF.  Where is the City’s population and where will it grow?  What are trends of small businesses.  Why do people live in SSF and work elsewhere Staff Comments Marian Lee announced that this is her last meeting with the CAC and her last day with SSF is July 26, 2019. She expressed her enjoyment in working with the Committee. Committee Member Comments Committee members thanked Marian Lee for her assisting and wished her the best of luck. Adjournment The meeting adjourned at 8:24 p.m.. The next meeting is scheduled for September 10, 2019 at 7:00 p.m.
