CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION SPECIAL MEETING
CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO
Thursday December 10, 2020
Teleconference Meeting
I. CALL TO ORDER: 6:31 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL:
Present: Commissioners: Boldenweck, Bond, Campagna, Hobson-Coard,
Foley, DeNatale, Looper, Ramos
Absent: Commissioner: Bowen
Staff Present: Sharon Ranals, ACM/Director of Parks and Recreation

III. AGENDA REVIEW:
Chair Looper asked to move the election of officers to new business instead of unfinished
business.
IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES of November 19, 2020:
Minutes for November 19, 2020 stand as sent.
Please note that Commissioner Foley arrived at 6:49 p.m. after roll call was taken.
V. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION:
Manager Duldulao introduced Administrative Assistant, Cristina Simmons, who has worked
with the Parks and Recreation Childcare Program since 2012. Administrative Assistant
Simmons will be helping in the transition of Administrative Assistant Susan Filereto’s pending retirement.

VII. NEW BUSINESS:
1. Election of Officers Chair Looper reviewed the process for electing a new Chair and Vice Chair. Chair Looper asked for nominations for Chair first. Commissioner Campagna nominated Vice Chair DeNatale. Commissioner Hobson-Coard nominated Commissioner Campagna. Commissioner Campagna deferred his nomination in favor of Vice Chair
DeNatale as Chair. Chair Looper accepted Commissioner Campagna’s deferral and called
for a vote. The Commission unanimously approved Vice Chair DeNatale as the new Chair by a roll call vote. Chair Looper asked for nominations for Vice Chair. Vice Chair DeNatale nominated Commissioner Campagna. Commissioner Campagna accepted the nomination.
Commissioner Hobson-Cord nominated Commissioner Boldenweck. Commissioner
Boldenweck declined the nomination. Chair Looper asked for a roll call vote. Commissioner Campagna was unanimously approved as Vice Chair. Chair Looper congratulated Commissioner Campagna and Vice Chair DeNatale. VIII: SUBCOMMITTEES:
1. Future Public Art Plan
Vice Chair DeNatale stated that the subcommittee has received 140 responses to the
Public Art Survey and the age of respondents was balanced between youth and older
adults. A full summary of the findings will be provided at the January meeting.
2. Sculpture
ACM/Director Ranals stated the Commission’s decision to place the Giraffe in the
sculpture garden will stand. She mentioned the foundation has already been poured and
will be installed by the end of the year.
Manager Duldulao confirmed the target date for installation is by December 17, 2020.
3. Photography Exhibit 2021
Commissioner Hobson-Coard stated Scott Buschman will be the judge of the online
photography exhibit. The title of the exhibit will be “Living in Virtual Times”. The
exhibit will run from February 14, 2020 to March 14, 2020. Flyers and the Call for
Entries should be available by next Friday, as well as on the website.

Commissioner Bond asked if the photography exhibit could be displayed as a digital
display, such as a billboard or large TV screen. Chair Looper suggested that this idea be
discussed in a subcommittee meeting and asked Commissioner Hobson-Coard to invite
Commissioner Bond to a meeting to discuss her suggestion. Commissioner Hobson-
Cord agreed.
4. Fundraiser
Commissioner Hobson-Coard reported that the subcommittee is moving forward with
the jewelry auction and will consider the rock art auction at a later date. She asked all
Commissioners to donate jewelry. Chair Looper and Commissioner Bond stated they
would donate some jewelry pieces.

XI. ITEMS FROM STAFF:
Manager Duldulao encouraged the Commissioners to go by the Joseph Fernekes
Recreation Building in Orange Memorial Park to see the Winter Wonderland window
displays.
Manager Duldulao discussed the potential for a regional stay at home order to go into
effect at any time and its impact on City operations.
Manager Duldulao stated that recreation offices will be closed the week of December 21,
2020 through December 25, 2020.
Manager Duldulao introduced the topic of the City Council’s reorganization.
ACM/Director Ranals confirmed Mark Addiego is the new Mayor and Mark Nagales is the
new Vice Mayor. She reported that two longstanding councilmembers, Rich Garbarino and
Karyl Matsumoto, will no longer be serving on the Council. She also named James
Coleman as a new councilmember.

ACM/Director Ranals stated there is one vacancy remaining on City Council, which
Council has voted to appoint a representative. Applicants will be invited to apply for the
vacancy. The appointee will not represent a specific district.
Specialist Santos informed the Commission that she will be sending Commissioners
additional correspondence that was not included in the packet due to the earlier meeting
date.
Manager Duldulao congratulated Vice Chair DeNatale and Commissioner Campagna on
their new positions. She also mentions that this is Administrative Assistant Filereto’s last
meeting and thanked her for her service as she will be retiring soon. Commissioners,
ACM/Director Ranals and Specialist Santos also thanked Administrative Assistant Filereto
for her service and wished her well.
