CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION MEETING
CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO
Thursday July 15, 2021
Teleconference Meeting
I. CALL TO ORDER: 6:30 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL:

III. AGENDA REVIEW: N/A
IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES of June 17, 2021:
Minutes for June 17, 2021 stand as sent.
V. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION: N/A
VI. PRESENTATION: Robin Rodricks, Executive Director, San Mateo Office of
Arts & Culture
Executive Director Robin Rodricks announced the reorganization of the San Mateo County
Arts Commission under the newly formed San Mateo County Office of Arts and Culture.
Upcoming County grant opportunity was announced and the new application process
was reviewed.
Past County-funded public art projects discussed in reference to application process.
Cultural Arts Commission (CAC) invited to submit general arts and culture projects
for funding at start of grant cycle in September 2021.
Specialist Santos to receive email invitation in August. Staff will be responsible for
reviewing grant guidelines and completing application.
Action: Grant submission ideas to be discussed at August meeting.

VII. UNFINISHED BUSINESS
1. Parks and Recreation COVID-19 Update
(Recreation Manager, Angela Duldulao)
City offices to open to the public on Monday, August 2.
Masks required for unvaccinated individuals, masks optional for vaccinated
individuals unless in common areas where children 12 and under are present.
Boards and Commissions to return to in person meetings in January, City Council to begin hybrid meetings at the end of July.
VIII. NEW BUSINESS
1. 2022 Art Show Schedule – Dates
(Cultural Arts Specialist, Ercie Santos)
Forecast for 2022 exhibits: two-day events at Municipal Services Building (MSB)
upon room availability.
First show scheduled for February 11 and 12.
Second show (Youth Art show) scheduled for March or April.
Third show scheduled for May 13/14 or July 14/15.
Fourth show scheduled for October 14/15.
Action: CAC to select between May and July dates for third show, as well as discuss media to
be considered for each show.
IX. SUBCOMMITTEES:
1. Strategic Vision
Chair DeNatale noted that the subcommittee discussed the Public Art Master Plan
RFP and it is close to a release date.
Community meeting on August 14 will provide feedback to be applied to Public Art
Master Plan.
2. Sculpture
Mgr. Duldulao noted that the contract for the new sculpture to be placed at the
Caltrain station is to be awarded at the July 28 City Council meeting.
Installation of the sculpture is scheduled for the Fall of 2022.
3. Urban Art
Commissioner Bond informed the Commission that there is a budget for murals, and
encouraged subcommittee members who had not yet participated in the doodle poll to
schedule a subcommittee meeting to reply as soon as possible.
4. Fundraiser – Virtual Auction
No update from Commissioner Bowen at this time.

5. Virtual General Art Exhibit – July 23 – August 31
Specialist Santos reported that 27 submissions were received, which have been sent to
the judge for consideration; he will inform Specialist Santos of his decision early next
week.
Exhibit launches morning of July 23.
Proposal to invite Judge Craig Corpora to a future CAC meeting to provide an
overview of the judging process.
6. Quilt Exhibit 2021 Virtual – Oct/Nov
Commissioner Boldenweck noted that the show will feature textiles and quilts, and
will not be judged.
7. Performing Arts
No update from Commissioner Hobson-Coard at this time.
8. Community Engagement
Subcommittee continued discussion on Commissioner Foley’s proposed concept of an
Artist Registry.
Commissioner Mardahay introduced proposal for art as a form of healing: this would
include outreach to art departments of Kaiser, UCSF, etc. to feature work from local
artists.
X. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION
Announcement
Commissioner Hobson-Coard invited all to attend her Lovestruck Band performance at the
Japan Town festival from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 7.
XI. ITEMS FROM STAFF:
1. Upcoming Events/CAC Meet & Greet at SSF Field Day
(Tuesday, July 20, 4-7 p.m.)
CAC Meet & Greet time set for 6 p.m. on July 20
2. Parks & Recreation Master Plan Open House (Saturday, August 14, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
Opportunity to generate interest among community about Public Art Master Plan
Announcement
Specialist Santos invited Commissioners to participate in “Our Parks and Rec Story” initiative
for Parks and Recreation Month (July 2021). She also called attention to a postcard included
in the Correspondence section that featured Oakland-based artist Bruce Beasley, whose
“Stone Horizon” piece resides in our Sculpture Garden.
