CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION MEETING
CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO
Thursday September 16, 2021
Teleconference Meeting
I. CALL TO ORDER: 6:30 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL:
Present: Commissioners: Boldenweck, Bond, Bowen, Cansino,

IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES of August 19, 2021:
Minutes for August 19, 2021 stand as sent.
V. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION: N/A
VI. UNFINISHED BUSINESS
1. San Mateo County Arts Grant
(Recreation Manager, Angela Duldulao)
▪ SMC announced trust-based grant opportunity, submission process discussed.
▪ Grant opportunity to open September 29, and workshop set for September 21.
▪ Chair DeNatale proposed Poetry Box as grant submission to feature literary art.
Action: Mgr. Duldulao to attend SMC Grant Workshop on September 21 and report back
on the status of the application and proposed projects to be funded by the grant.
VII. NEW BUSINESS
1. Cancellation of December 16 meeting
(Cultural Arts Specialist, Ercie Santos)
▪ Commissioners agreed to cancel December 16 meeting.
▪ Staff to continue to work on Commission items, including future shows/events, as
well as the Public Art Master Plan.

VIII. SUBCOMMITTEES:
1. Strategic Vision
▪ Chair DeNatale noted that the Public Art Master Plan RFP is on track to be
released at end of September.
2. Sculpture
▪ Commissioner Boldenweck provided update on damage to Windswept sculpture.
▪ Repair and relocation options discussed by Mgr. Duldulao and Deputy Dir.
Mediati; consultation with original artist to be scheduled.
3. Urban Art
▪ Commissioner Bond discussed decisions in process for murals, including options
for different sites, and discussions re: visibility and muralist recruitment.
▪ Mgr. Duldulao and Specialist Santos noted no updated on Caltrain Station mural.
4. Fundraiser – Virtual Auction August 27 – 29
▪ Commissioner Bowen summarized results of Virtual Auction: 16 participants, with
68 bids total and an average of 3 bids per item.
▪ Fundraiser totaled $810.00 (~$760.00 after fees).
▪ Commissioner Bowen thanked staff for their support throughout the life of the
event, including creation of online portal.
▪ Commissioners inquired about hosting virtual auctions more frequently, Mgr.
Duldulao confirmed CAC may have more opportunity to do so now that the portal
has been created.
5. Virtual Quilt & Fiber Arts Exhibit – Oct. 15 – Nov. 30
▪ Commissioner Boldenweck noted that entry form and publicity for exhibit has
gone out and event is on track.
▪ Commissioners DeNatale and Bond suggested implementing an auction or raffle at
event, Specialist Santos and Commissioner Boldenweck will explore idea of silent
auction, but due to timeline may not be feasible for upcoming show.
6. Performing Arts
▪ No update from Commissioner Hobson-Coard at this time.
7. Community Engagement
▪ No update from Commissioner Mardahay at this time.
8. Art Exhibit – February 11/12, 2022
▪ Commissioner Hobson-Coard noted that subcommittee is in initial planning phases
for first show of the new year.

IX. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION
Announcement
Commissioner Hobson-Coard invited all to view her artwork at the Philz Coffee in
Sunnyvale, which will be featured until the end of November.
X. ITEMS FROM STAFF:
1. Upcoming Events
a. Saturday, September 18, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. – Coastal Cleanup Day (Haskins Way at
Bay Trail)
b. Saturday, September 25, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. – City Hall 101st Birthday Concert (400
Block of Grand Ave.)
2. Budget
▪ Mgr. Duldulao reviewed Cultural Arts Commission Funds budget.
▪ Track donations dedicated to scholarship or raised via fundraising year to year.
▪ Balance with Encumbrances at approximately $28,900.00.
Announcement
Mgr. Duldulao informed CAC that increase in commissioner stipend is to take effect on
September 25. Increase approved by City Council at July 28 meeting and required a change
in City Ordinance, with a reading 30 days later (August 25).
Deputy Dir. Mediati invited Commissioners to upcoming LPR Site Tours.
XI. CORRESPONDENCE:
1. Correspondence Packet
(Cultural Arts Specialist, Ercie Santos)
▪ Commission’s 2021 Goal and Committees list updated to include 2022 art shows.
▪ List of committees and members updated to reflect recent appointments; please
submit adjustments to Mgr. Duldulao or Specialist Santos.
▪ Specialist Santos invited commissioners to send event flyers the Friday prior to
commission meetings to be included in Correspondence Packet.
▪ Peninsula Arts Museum exhibit in October.
▪ ArtSpan Studio annual open studio September 16 – November 21.
Action: Correspondence deadlines to be added to future agendas.
XII. ADJOURNMENT:
Chair DeNatale adjourned the meeting at 7:35 p.m.
