CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION MEETING

I. CALL TO ORDER: 6:30 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL:

IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES of March 17, 2022:
Minutes for March 17, 2022 stand as sent.
V. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION:
▪ Mayor Mark Nagales and City Manager Mike Futrell shared their appreciation and
admiration for the work that the Cultural Arts Commission has done to make South
San Francisco a better place.

VII. NEW BUSINESS: N/A
VIII. SUBCOMMITTEES:
1. Strategic Vision
▪ Business Mgr. O’Brien updated the Commission that the City is working with the
Public Art Master Plan consultants to determine dates for their outreach and visits.
▪ Commissioner DeNatale encouraged the Commission to participate in the community
outreach process for the proposed new Aquatic Center at Orange Memorial Park.

▪ Commissioner DeNatale suggested potential future discussions on the relocation of art
pieces due to the construction of the new Aquatic Center and encouraged others to
think of ways art can be incorporated into the building design.
2. Sculpture
No update.
3. Urban Art
▪ Commissioner Bond shared a comic storyboard, created by the restoration artist for the
Prometheus mural, announcing the completion of Prometheus mural restoration.
▪ The mural project at the Alta Loma Park bathroom structure is underway. Weather
permitting, the artists will be working Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
4. Youth Art Programs
▪ Commissioner Bowen provided updates for the upcoming Youth Art Show, featuring
individual work from South San Francisco Unified School District students, and group
submissions from the South San Francisco Parks and Recreation childcare programs.
▪ Commissioner Bowen reminded the Commission to volunteer as docents for the event.
▪ Commissioner Bowen explained that the Library would be announcing the City’s
inaugural Youth Poet-in-Residence.
▪ The 2022 Cultural Arts Fundraiser Barbeque will be held on August 28, 2022 between
12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. at the Joseph A. Fernekes Recreation Building.
▪ Chair Campagna reminded the Commissioners that they are expected to attend and
help on the day of the barbeque. He also encouraged additional commissioners to join
the planning subcommittee.
▪ Chair Campagna presented on the subcommittee’s awardee selections for the Jack
Drago Cultural Arts Commission Youth Art Scholarship.
▪ The Commission agreed unanimously by roll call vote to award the scholarship in the
amount of $1,500 each to Celeste Esquerra and Nadine Macapagal, both students from
El Camino High School.
5. Performing Arts
No update.
6. Community Engagement
▪ Commissioner Mardahay informed the Commission that she will schedule a
subcommittee meeting to discuss helping with the fundraiser and her experiences
reaching out to local artists.
IX. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION
Announcement
▪ Commissioner Foley will be participating in an exhibit at Project 275 Open Studios in
Redwood City.
▪ Commissioner Hobson-Coard is participating in Women’s View 2022, the San Mateo
County Women’s Art Show, taking place from March 1 to April 29, 2022, at 400
County Center, Redwood City.

▪ Commissioner Hobson-Coard invited Commissioners to Fort McKinley in South San
Francisco on June 18, 2022, to watch her band Lovestruck perform at 8:00 p.m.
X. ITEMS FROM STAFF
1. Upcoming Events
▪ New Aquatic Center Workshop #2, Saturday, April 30, 2022,10:00 a.m. to 12:00
p.m. at the Joseph Fernekes Recreation Building
▪ Arbor Day and Earth Day Event, April 23, 2022, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Sister
Cities Park
2. New Aquatic Center Project
▪ Deputy Director Duldulao explained that if Commissioners who cannot attend the
in-person workshop can respond via a survey that will be shared after the event.
3. Old Grand Avenue Breezeway Rehabilitation
▪ Deputy Director Duldulao informed the Commission of the renovation work that
the Parks Division has been doing at the Grand Avenue Breezeway.
▪ Staff will need to assess the condition of the “Doors of Avignon” murals that are
installed in the breezeway to determine if they need to be taken down.
▪ Assistant City Manager Ranals provided a brief background on the history of the
“Doors of Avignon,” which were created by artist John Pugh
▪ The Commission discussed alternative ideas for the existing art pieces in the
Breezeway, as well as the potential for new art pieces to be curated for the space.
