RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE ACCEPTANCE OF
$29,205 IN SAN MATEO COUNTY MEASURE K FUNDS
VIA THE PENINSULA LIBRARY SYSTEM TO SUPPORT
THE LIBRARY'S SUMMER LEARNING CHALLENGE
2023, AND APPROVING BUDGET AMENDMENT #
23.045.
WHEREAS, in 2016, County of San Mateo (County) voters approved Measure K, a countywide
half -cent sales tax extension to support County services, including funds to support library summer learning
programs; and
WHEREAS, the Summer Learning Challenge program was established to encourage children and
teens to read during the school break; and
WHEREAS, the Library has been awarded $29,205 in San Mateo County Measure K funds via the
Peninsula Library System; and
WHEREAS, funding will be used to fund $27,205 in free book giveaways and two $1,000
scholarships for two Summer Learning Challenge participants; and
WHEREAS, free books will be available in Chinese, English, Spanish and Tagalog for distribution
in the Library, South San Francisco Unified School District (SSFUSD) elementary school sites in the weeks
leading up to summer break, at SSFUSD summer lunch programs, at SSF Big Lift sites, Parks and
Recreation summer camp attendees and other programs; and
WHEREAS, strengthening of learning programs is an action item in the City's Strategic Plan
under Priority #2: Quality of Life; and
WHEREAS, staff recommends the acceptance of the donations in the amount of $29,205 to
support the 2023 Summer Learning Challenge; and
WHEREAS, the Measure K funds will be used to amend Fiscal Year 2022-23 operating budget of
the Library Department via Budget Amendment # 23.045; and
WHEREAS, Funds not expended in fiscal year 2022-2023 will be carried over into fiscal year
2023-2024.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of South San Francisco
does hereby accept $29,205 from San Mateo County Measure K funds via the Peninsula Library System to
fund the 2023 Summer Learning Challenge.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Council approves Budget Amendment #23.005 to
amend the Fiscal Year 2022-2023 Operating Budget in order to reflect an increase of $29,205.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Council hereby authorizes the City Manager to
execute the documents necessary to accept the funding and take any other actions necessary to carry out the
intent of this resolution on behalf of the City Council, subject to approval as to form by the City Attorney.
At a meeting of the City Council on 2/22/2023, a motion was made by Vice Mayor Nagales,
seconded by Councilmember Addiego, that this Resolution be approved. The motion passed.
