AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 20.71 OF THE
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO MUNICIPAL CODE TO ALLOW
PATIO ENCLOSURES IN REAR YARD SETBACKS
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO DOES ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. Chapter 20.71 of the South San Francisco Municipal Code is hereby
amended by adding note (m) to Table 20.71.030 which shall read:

(m) Attached patio covers, not exceeding twelve feet in height, with wall
materials primarily consisting of glass, screens, plastic or other trans-
lucent materials as allowed by the Uniform Building Code, are allowed
within the required rear yard setback of any conventional single-family
subdivision or within any specific or original rear yard setbacks of any
detached single-family or townhouse planned unit development (formerly
residential planned developments or planned communities), subject to
maintaining a minimum distance of ten feet from the rear lot line and
five feet from the side lot line. If the existing structure is less than
five feet to the side lot line, the patio cover may conform to the exist-
ing setback provided such patio cover is not less than three feet from
the side lot line. Patio covers shall only be used for recreational,
outdoor living purposes and not as carports, garages, storage rooms or
habitable rooms. Patio covers shall not be considered additional floor
area for parking purposes as per Sections 20.74.030 and 20.74.040 of the
South San Francisco Municipal Code. No patio cover may project more than
fifteen feet from an existing dwelling or contain more than three hundred
square feet in area unless a use permit is granted to exceed these standards.
SECTION 2. Publication and Effective Date.
This ordinance shall be published once in the Enterprise-Journal, a news-
paper of general circulation in the City of South San Francisco, as required by
law, and shall become effective thirty (30~ days from and after its adoption.
Introduced at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of South
San Francisco, held the 27th day of January , 19 88 .
Adopted as an Ordinance of the City of South San Francisco at a regular
meeting of the City Council of the City of South San Francisco, held the lOth
day of February , 19 88 , by the following vote:
AYES: Councilmembers Mark N. Addiego, Richard A. Haffey, Gus Nicolopulos,
Roberta Cerri Teglia, and Jack Drago
