CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
A RESOLUTION COMMENDING BARBARA BATTAYA FOR HER SERVICE
AND COMMITMENT TO THE CITY AND CITIZENS OF
sOUTH SAN FRANCISCO
WHEREAS, Barbara was born in Los Angeles in 1933, moved to Oakland at the age of five, and to
San Francisco at the age of seventeen; and
WHEREAS, because of Barbara's interest in thespian activities, she was encouraged by her teachers
to demonstrate her abilities in class and school plays; and, accompanied by her mother, Barbara entertained
the USO at various army camps and won beauty contests as Miss Camp Stoneman and Mi~s Armed Forces;
and
WHEREAS, during this time, she attended evening classes at the University of San Francisco
pursuing accounting and business law classes while being tutored to perform Shakespeare at local
amphitheaters; and
WHEREAS, Barbara joined the Alice Street Players and performed at the Hillbarn Theatre with a
lead in John Brown's Body; and
WHEREAS, Barbara worked for the Standard Oil Company as a junior accountant for sixteen and
one half years, attended court reporting school for three years, worked in the courts for four months, and
for Bechtel Corporation for two and one half years; and
WHEREAS, Barbara married Robert Battaya, bought the home of Lou Ercoli's mother who was the
founder of the Leaning Tower Restaurant, and in 1976 moved to South San Francisco. The Leaning Tower
was the favorite restaurant of Barbara and Robert; and
WHEREAS, Barbara began her career with the City of South San Francisco in 1977, as Secretary to
the Finance Director, and in August, 1979, was appointed City Clerk; and,
WHEREAS, Barbara successfully ran for election as City Clerk in 1980, 1985, 1989, 1993 and
1997; and,
WHEREAS, in 1980, Barbara became an active member in women's professional organizations
such as the South San Francisco Women's Club and the American Business Women's Association. Barbara
also joined the Lion's Club in 1980; and
WHEREAS, Barbara became a member of the California State Association of Local Elected
Officials in 1980, became its President in 1988, Manager in 1990, and also sen'ed on the Board of
Directors; and
WHEREAS, Barbara plans to travel to Ireland, Scotland and Whales with her friend Frances
Liston, followed by the pursuit of her hobbies of gourmet cooking, knitting, quilting, and piano, in addition
to consulting for the City; and
WHEREAS, Barbara is appreciated for her dedication to the people of this City, and her retirement
was effective on December 30, 1998.
NOW, THEREFORE, WE, the members of the City Council of the City of South San Francisco,
do hereby congratulate Barbara for 21 years of service to the City and wish her a long, healthy and happy
retirement.
