HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 96-1997RESOLUTION NO. 96-97 CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING CALTRAIN SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS WHEREAS, there has been 132 years of continuous passenger train service between San Francisco and San Jose; and WHEREAS, CalTrain has always been an important and viable form of transportation for Peninsula cities, enhancing regional mobility, reducing traffic congestion, improving air quality and contributing to the vitality and quality of life of Bay Area commuters; and WHEKEAS, since July 1, 1992, when the Joint Powers Board assumed full responsibility for CalTrain, its mission has been to provide passenger-friendly and cost-effective commuter rail service as a component of a larger regional transit system; and WHEREAS, ridership on CalTrain continues to climb due to increasing gridlock on California's aging highways; and WHEREAS, a recent study by the Joint Powers Board has shown that ridership on the CalTrain system could double by the year 2010 if improvement and expansion activities, coupled with external factors, are implemented; and WHEREAS, these improvements consist of run-time reductions, increasing train and shuttle service, transit-oriented developments, connections with other rail systems and the Airport Light Rail Transit System; and WHEREAS, CalTrain provides a convenient transportation alternative for the 42,000 workers employed in the City as well as the 57,000 people residing in the Community. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of South San Francisco supports CalTrain and encourages the Joint Powers Board to continue to pursue system improvements, including run-time reductions, increasing train and shuttle service, transit-oriented developments, connections with other rail systems and the Airport Light Rail Transit System. I hereby certify the foregoing Resolution was regularly introduced and adopted by the City Council of the City of South San Francisco at a regul ar meeting held on the t3th day of August ,1997 by the following vote: AYES: Councilmembers James L.
