CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE ALAMEDA CENTER
FOR ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGIES (ACET)
WHEREAS, the State of California is experiencing a prolonged
period of economic uncertainty which demands innovative responses
and creative approaches to address unemployment; and
WHEREAS, a variety of factors have contributed to the Bay Area
being especially hard hit economically, including the announced
base closings by the Department of Defense; and
WHEREAS, the East Bay offers a unique combination of
attributes, including a thriving environmental and biotechnology
industry, major education institutions, national laboratories,
civic and business leaders, advocacy groups, regulatory agencies
and defense bases, which if coordinated, offer great opportunity to
help turn around the local economies by creating new business and
jobs; and
WHEREAS, the Alameda County Economic Development Advisory
Board (EDAB), in concert with the East Bay Conversion and
Reinvestment Commission, has responded to the potential economic
impact of military base closings by developing a proposal to create
the Alameda Center for Environmental Technologies (ACET); and
WHEREAS, the ACET proposal was developed in conjunction with
a wide spectrum of local businesses, educational institutions,
research laboratories, regulatory agencies, and local governments;
and
WHEREAS, the establishment of ACET would expedite the
development, commercialization and application of new environmental
technologies and therefore generate new businesses and jobs in an
area where the economy must shift away from a defense emphasis; and
WHEREAS, federal support of ACET is needed to assure that the
Bay Area is assisted with job and business development as military
base closings threaten further erosion of healthy local economies.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of South San
Francisco does hereby express its strong endorsement of and support
for the creation of the Alameda Center for Environmental
Technologies in the Bay Area.
I hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was regularly
introduced and adopted by the City Council of the City of South San
Francisco at a re§u]ar meeting held on the 22nd day of
June' , 1994 by the following vote:
