CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE SOUTH SAN
FRANCISCO POLICE DEPARTMENT THE USE OF $400,000 OF
THE CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO'S GENERAL FUND
UNDESIGNATED RESERVES, $350,000 TO BE USED TO
INCREASE EXISTING STAFFING LEVELS AND $50,000 FOR
THE FORMATION OF A "COMMUNITY COALITION ON SAFE
NEIGHBORHOODS"; AND AMENDING THE POLICE
DEPARTMENT' S FISCAL YEAR 2010/11 OPERATING BUDGET
WHEREAS, the City of South San Francisco ("City') staff recommends that the City Council
adopt a resolution authorizing the Police Department the use $400,000 (four hundred thousand
dollars) of the City's General Fund Undesignated Reserves, $350,000 to be used to hire additional
police officers and $50,000 for the formation of a "Community Coalition on Safe Neighborhoods";
and amending the Police Department 2010/11 Fiscal Year operating budget in order to better respond
to gang issues; and
WHEREAS, City and the Police Department have recognized the need to be more efficient in
dealing with the increased gang activity within the City while still effectively handling calls for
service and other issues within the City; and
WHEREAS, in order to better deal with the ongoing gang issue citywide the Police
Department recommends adding an additional four police officers to the current staffing level for the
Police Department, which would raise the number of sworn staff from seventy-nine (79) to eighty-
three (83) for atwo-year period; and
WHEREAS, the authorization to increase the number of sworn staff would allow the Police
Department to assign more officers to positions that conduct outreach and related gang prevention.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of South San
Francisco that the City Council hereby:
Authorizes the Police Department to hire four (4) additional police officers.
2. Authorizes the formation of a "Community Coalition on Safe Neighborhoods."
Authorizes the use of four hundred thousand dollars of the City's General Fund
Undesignated Reserves for that purpose.
4. Amends the Police Department's Fiscal Year 2010/11 Operating Budget.
I hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was regularly introduced and adopted by the
City Council of the City of South San Francisco at a regular meeting held on the 26th day of January
2011 by the following vote:
AYES: Councilmembers Mark Addiego, Pedro Gonzalez, and Karvl Matsumoto,
Vice Mayor Richard A. Garbarino and Mayor Kevin Mullin
